The dude looks like he can kick all sorts of ass even at 72, but what the hell is a 70+ year-old supposed to be able to do to reach that rank?

Maybe it's not for personal ability but for what he has done (or is doing) for judo.
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."

Exactly, after your competition days are over, to progress through the higher dan ranks, it is all about time, and how much you have contributed to Judo. What an awesome achievement. It takes so much dedication. He must be very honored.
