Nagoya Grows Up

Mitsubishi Estate has announced that it will be tearing down the landmark Dai Nagoya Building in front of Nagoya Station. The 15-storey, 53m structure will be replaced with a 38-storey building some 190m tall. Work will start next year and will be finished by 2015. The original Dai Nagoya Building dates back to 1962 and was famous for its rooftop advertising globe which you can see in the picture above but which was actually removed in 2007. Mitsubishi could not confirm whether the new building will retain the old name. The plan is just the latest in a rush of new highrise developments. The station front Nagoya Terminal Building, housing Matsuzakaya department store, will become a 260m monster in 2017 while the site of the former Nagoya Central Post Office is set to top out at 210m when finished in 2012. Already open next to the station are the 245m JR Central Towers building and the 247m Midland Square.

My question. Has Godzilla ever attacked Nagoya? The term 'landmark' is wonderful euphemism when applied to anything on these benighted isles. It would seemingly mean something that is too ugly to be called an attraction and too big to be ignored.

Good point Dimmer. That should be in the "manefesto," that the Land Agency can only recognize an area as a "land mark," or "National Treasure," if it has been attacked by Godzilla.

I'm sensing a "compensating for diminutive knob" theme here.

It won't be housing the store anymore:
Kyodo via Japan Today: J Front Retailing to close Matsuzakaya store at Nagoya station
J Front Retailing Co plans to close its Matsuzakaya department store at Nagoya station in Aichi Prefecture by this summer amid fierce competition, sources close to the matter said Wednesday. J Front Retailing, which owns Daimaru and Matsuzakaya department store chains, will finalize and announce the plan Thursday, the sources said. The company had been in negotiations to reopen the store after the planned reconstruction of the building that now houses the store. However, amid intense competition, the company now believes that it would be difficult to secure sales that would meet expenses to operate the outlet, the sources said. The closure of the department store, located in a major train station that attracts many people as the gateway to Nagoya, is expected to deal a major blow to the company.
