I thought you couldn't officially have both Japanese and American nationality after 20 (or thereabouts). I have heard (maybe here at FG) if people keep quiet they can probably keep both, though.

Yes this is true - except if the person has sporting ability or some sort of benefit then things like pesky immigration laws are quickly dealt with. :)

But it seems that only one of these siblings is 22. The other two are 20 and 15 so they are still OK for dual nationality.

I was told that from the usa side, 18 is the cut off for men - because of military reasons.

The US generally has no issue with dual nationality or multiple nationality. However, for certain situations like military service and/or security clearance is concerned, I believe there is a law or rule stipulating US nationality only. However, that certainly has not prevented former Israeli Defence Force veteran and White House Chief of Staff, Rahm Emanuel in any way (people will generally not question dual Israeli-US nationality due to fear of being labeled "anti-Semitic" and/or questioning the Right of Return)

The one legal requirement for all US dual passport holders is that when re-entering the US, they must do so on their US passport only.

As for Japan, there has already been a lot written on the situation on this and other boards. Technically, dual nationality is forbidden but generally not enforced - and there is a certain degree of "don't ask, don't tell". With minors it is absolutely not an issue but upon turning 20, they are "expected" to chose.

Even when naturalizing, the Japanese authorities (currently) do not go out of their way to enforce the rule, and certain Embassies play along. The British Embassy will allow one to "renounce their citizenship" and after the person has submitted "proof" to the Japanese Ministry of Justice, they simply return to the Embassy to get it back!

Times are changing however. More and more Japanese living abroad who try and renew their passports at Japanese embassies and consulates are being denied if their passports lack visa stamps that indicate they are there as citizens of another country. In those cases, before getting "outed" they fly back to Japan to renew. For those who get outed by the legal announcements on their naturalization (as a citizen of another country), it's more difficult. By then, the Japanese consular officials have already read the announcement and are calling in the person to surrender their Jap passport...

Yup, this has been discussed at length on this board before. Essentially, what you say is correct, but it is still not being enforced at any measurable percent, other than the random official(s) being shitty, or just trying to show his own importance.

The fact still remains that no country wants to lose citizens. As such, they are reluctant to put their citizens in a position where they must choose a citizenship, because individual can just as easily choose the other country and renounce their J-citizenship (or whichever) and take the alternate citizenship. Therefore at the high levels of almost all governments, there is a resistance to establishing any defining enforcement of this "coming of age" citizenship requirement. All of my kids and those of all of my friends that have two passports have continued to use both and have not had any problems. I can see where it could get difficult if your J-passport expires overseas. But, I just would think that care should be taken in making sure you re-new in Japan. Otherwise, there is not a problem to speak of (yet) for duo-passport holders.

Funny how that happens, isn't it.
Sportsmen, artists, scientists and intellectuals who have essentially abandoned Japan as "infertile ground" are roundly ignored until they achieve something, then they're suddenly pure-blooded sons and daughters of the empire again.

And only moments after I wrote the above post I flipped on the tube to find a "special" about her going on, with a reporter in her home town, interviews with her original Japanese coach, interviews with her Russian coach, interviews with her partner ... etc. What a talented, determined woman she is.

No problem with any of it really, except for the backflip aspect.

Apparently she's forgiven.

Since Japan has nobody entered in the couples and it looks like her partner and her have a chance at a medal, it is old Japanese custom that she should be forgiven during one of the four seasons, unless she doesn't score a medal at which point, all bets are off and she is a traitor again.....

Chinese gold ends Russian pairs medal streak
For the first time in 1964, a Russian pair will not be atop the medal stand for pairs figure skating. In fact, the Russians were shut out of pairs medals completely, with the Chinese pairs of Xue Shen and Hongbo Zhao and Qing Pang and Jian Tong taking gold and silver, respectfully, and Aliona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy from Germany winning bronze.

Looks as though Kawaguchi's fuggup can be blamed at least in part on her coach. She was prepared to do a quadruple throw jump, but the coach chickened out at the last moment and told her to switch to a triple right before the performance ... as in, immediately before going on the ice.

I can understand how that could have "thrown" her.

That's a good point (despite the pun:p ). It's an old sports rule, don't change the game plan while walking on to the field for the game... It destroy the psych and the timing....

Kawaguchi et al, just missed the bronze and I would have like to have seen them medal, if for no other reason, to see the media sink to new depths in re-birthing her as one of "our" Japanese children. All this, after the original "traitor" approach...

You can take your hood off stupid ignorant clam. Of course they would, she is Japanese. She has artifficially changed citizenship to skate for another country, that doesn't mean she is no longer Japanese. If they had won, the media would have justifiably been all over as a JAPANESE person winning gold.

What a load of crock. Sheesh!!

Once again also you ignorant clam. She is Japanese. Are you disputing that? What kind of fucking attitude is that. It's irrelevant that she has changed her citizenship for whatever reason. The portuguese in Canada who become Canadian citizens are they less Portuguese because of it? Fuck you guys are stupid beyond redemption.
