When you already have a working product, how can you add new aspects to it to differentiate it from perfect product substitutes? Today Kawaguchi talks about the manner-mode pen, showing how a simple pen plays a role in social interaction. Office workers should love this! But of course, it only means looking beyond the functional...

About this channel:
Morinosuke Kawaguchi is one of Japan's top technology consultants. On youTube he shares his ideas about aspects of unique (Japanese) product design with the English-speaking world. He is famous in Japan for writing books and articles about how to leverage Japanese subculture for top tier product development and innovation.

Kawaguchi has another blog in English here:

Morinosuke Kawaguchi refers to it as "Japanese Geeky Girly Engineering and Design" but does he really mean Japanese herbivore male engineering & design?

Watching the video I kept thinking Kawaguchi was trying to be Japan's Andy Kaufman of chidoku /Unuseless engineering.

Apparently, he is for real.

His focus on pen-clicking and bubble wrap popping is symptomatic of the restricted and repetitive behaviors of Autism.

On the other hand, maybe he is pulling an Andy on us...

You know, I've come to realize over the years that the same could be said of Japan as a whole.
"If there's a river, we'll dam it, and if there's a tree, we'll ram it - 'cause we Japanese are talkin' progress!"

Say whatever you want against this guy, but his English is far better than that of the majority of my students.

I used to do System LSI, basically staring at code and another screen with green wave forms... and shit you not, so many people click their pens because everyone is constatnly thinking about how to do something...

I still play with my pens, cant spin them, but the clicking just relieves small stress and helps you stay on your mark.
