Yahoo Japan versus Yahoo.com's coverage of Olympic medal counts. It's noteworthy to mention that the US was actually in second place at one point.

I just thought it was funny how the Japanese page only shows Japanese medals (they're in 18th place), and only links to articles about Japanese athletes, whereas the English Yahoo page shows multiple nations, references athletes from multiple nations, and links to multiple sports.

Also on Yahoo, I noticed that Daisuke Takahashi was in the top searches category.

Yahoo Japan (and much of the J-media in general) only report medals won by Japanese athletes. Apparently they're not interested in anyone else. Where other medalists are mentioned it is with the utmost brevity. Of course the media in other countries are mostly interested in medals won by their own athletes, but at least they usually present the entire picture rather than excluding/marginalizing everyone else.

This type of thing came up in another thread as well, in the case where Nagashima and Kato won the silver and bronze in the 500-meter speed skating. The gold was taken by Korea, but I can't remember seeing one report on the tube that mentioned that apparently insignificant detail.

Amen.

I have yet to hear Kimigayo in any one of the medal ceremonies. (Probably not..)

Same thing happened in Beijing during the Summer games. Chinese media outlets only focused on the medals won by their athletes and to a large extent didn't focus on other history making events, such as not covering Michael Phelps winning more gold than available at Fort Knox.

So what's new.

That's interesting.
So how do the Korean media handle medal reportage? Anyone know?

Maybe it's an Asian thing ...

Nationalistic fervor trumping objective reporting of the events I guess.

The US gets a lot of coverage in Korea. It's all centered around Anton Ohno and their hopes for his instant demise.....

At least China won enough medals to almost justify it.

I find it funny that people put so much stock into faggoty sporting events that no one usually pays any attention to.

The only reason I watched curling for more than three seconds today is because they just made a Simpsons episode about it.

I think people are being a bit harsh here. Go to any country and the mainstream media coverage will almost invariably focus on the performances of their own athletes. (Case in point, Australia...Read their coverage and you would assume that only Ozzies are competing in Vancouver, even though people from Down Under seem to have Downs Syndrome when it comes to the Winter Olympics. Who gives a fuck about who finishes 67th in the freestyle moguls? Yet, that's the focus of their coverage.)
I don't think the bias in coverage is a Japanese-thing as opposed to a media-thing. The media is simply catering to the people who pay for it, whatever the country.

You deserve a Gold Medal just for doing that!
How the fuck can you have a sport played with a broom, for fuck's sake? (Quidditch, excepted). Stupid, stupid sport.
The Winter Olympics should be limited to speedskating, all the events where you whizz down frozen waterslides at breakneck speeds, ski-jumping, the nordic combined (with live targets), alpine skiing, ice hockey and snowball fights. All the rest is just bullshit.

Good for Ohno. I don't see anything wrong with him winning so many medals, me...I kinda lost count already, but this IS the Olympics and aren't the Olympics about performance and sportsmanship? Winner take all? What the hell is wrong with people, why they have to make it personal?

Agreed! And I'm all for dwarf-tossing being included, too. (Except, I've barely seen a midget in Japan despite having lived here for decades. I guess it must be because of all the abortions they have, but there is definitely a shortage (he, he) of dwarves here.) Has anybody seen dwarves in Japan?

No, no, no....I don't mean little people. I'm talking about the real dwarves. You know, the ones with big foreheads and funny-shaped, bandy legs (OK, I know just about everyone in this country qualifies for the latter....)

Quite a few, actually. I was just thinking to myself the other day how frequently I saw them here compared with back in the US. Random chance, I suppose.

At work I was trying to get Olympic news on the keitai YahooJapan and it was almost exclusively news on Japanese athletes. They didn't even mention the names of the FGs who won medals.
