Itai News (Japanese) has picked up on a new product from Megahouse, a unit of SEGA. Gummix is a kit which allows you to make gelatine sweets in the shape of insects. The website provides a few recipe suggestions to get them looking realistic. The kit costs 3,675 yen

I had something kind of like that when I was a kid... it was basically an Easy-Bake oven except for boys who wanted to eat disgusting things. They never came out looking that realistic, or even as well-shaped as those photos though.

Corn and hard-boiled egg on pepperoni pizza is just GROSS! :puke:
(The bugs are kind of cute, though...)

I would prefer real (farmed) insects over that fake gelatine stuff. I've eaten fried silkworms in China, grasshoppers in Thailand (taste like shrimp), and giant ants in Central America (tastes nutty).

Properly farmed insects are very healthy and environmental friendly choice over mammal and fish based meat. Gram for gram, typically insects have several times less fat, more protein, and bio-accumulate less toxins and heavy metals from the environment than red meat. You also don't need to feed them any antibiotics, unlike traditionally farmed fish, cattle, pork, and poultry which are full of antibiotics and are a breading ground for drug resistant diseases. And for every gram of plant based feed (ie. grains, leaves, etc.) you also get the highest yet of meat including protein from insects than with any other animal, and insects have the lowest environmental (including carbon) impact.

It surprises me when people claim they are squeamish about eating insects, making the comparison that it is like eating a maggot or cockroach from the ground and eating it. That would be like saying that eating beef is the same as a picking up a sewer rat and eating it. Properly farmed insects of selected species which are cleaned, cooked, and prepared properly are a real treat. And are no less gross then eating shrimp, escargot, and even pork and beef.

It is a shame that in Japan, North America, and Europe, one cannot easily find farmed insects in the grocery stores.

Just do some google searches for the countless links to the health and environmental benefits of eating insects.

BTW, I also think that most Japanese pizza is gross. (Mayonnaise on a pizza is wrong on so many levels.)
