And that one was a 5 in Hachijo, 3 in Kanagawa - but you kids in Tokyo might only have gotten a 2.

It was still strong enough to wake me and my girlfriend up and make her grab my hands. Let's just hope that this is the earth letting off some little farts so it doesn't have to drop a bomb and ruin the party.

If I remember correctly, it could be a 6 and feel like a 7 depending on how close it is to the surface. The deeper the quake, the less you will feel it, but I think the magnitude still registers the same. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Wait, wtf that is the 3rd roller in the past 5 days?!! I'm thinking about sitting the next one out in Akita thanks. Kanto folks should consider investing in some new shorts.

I think some experts are saying it's the phillipines plate colliding into another one causing all of this.

I knew it! That just proves it's too dangerous to let Filipino nurses and caretakers into Japan.

Felt it. Probably a M1 in Tokyo. Nothing to get all worried about as I am in my pair of boxers and chillin'.

Yes no warning issued yet although the PM was on TV saying there may be tsunami of a metre in some areas of Honshu and that will be at around 2pm so coastal people (like me) need to be paying attention.

Many people here in New Zealand have been evacuated. We are seeing 1m+ waves so far. The sea level has dropped quite noticeably up the East Coast to the extent fish are flapping around on the beach. Surges starting to hit South Island. Hope you all in Japan will be okay!!!

JMA just starting to release predictions and warnings. Tsunami should hit Hokkaido at 1pm, Kanto at 1:30pm and Kyushu at 3pm. Possibly 1-3 ms.

Oh terrific, they're talking about 3-meter waves on the Pacific side from Aomori through Iwate down to Miyagi. 1-meter everywhere else.

Let's see ... where am I ... Miyagi!!
We're about a 10-minute drive from the ocean over relatively flat land. Probably far enough away, but still ... (gulp).

The police just started driving up and down the road telling people to move to higher ground. Holy crap I thought this was a minor thing. I may have to think about heading to higher ground. I guess it is because we are right near the river that feeds into the ocean, and they are concerned it will reverse and flood the area. Nice way to start a Sunday morning!

Or you're looking at a cached page. The warning is there all right.

Uh-oh ... you're in Aomori.
Yes, apparently these tsunami things like to travel through any waterways they can find, and manage to get quite a long way inland that way.

I had never visited the site before, so it couldn't have been a cached page. I had to go out for a while, and it's there now. I saw the info on TV, but I thought it was strange that the website showed no advisories or warnings on both Japanese and English sections.

Anyway... hopefully it will be of little consequence. Some overseas news sites are posting that Japan expects it to reduce considerably to only about 10 cm. Hawaii reported it was no higher than the normal rise and fall of the tide.

Yeah, haven't you seen Escape from L.A. where Kurt Russel and Peter Fonda are surfing down a canyon on a tsunami wave...bitchin.
