In this case the guy apparently owned the Eikaiwa school, so I guess it was sort of employment for life.

Yes, you certainly can't judge a book by its cover. I've met guys with graduate degrees, who've worked on several different continents, they settle down into semi-retirement in Japan, and sometimes even do a bit of volunteer or part-time work teaching children in their neighborhood. They might look mild-mannered and grandfatherly, but in their halcyon days were winning hearts and minds in pre-Soviet occupied Afghanistan, advising on public policy in Africa, and consulting in SE Asian countries that a certain empire was interesting in keeping the commies out of...

My assumption is that if they have him on 40 counts he has been doing whatever he has been doing for years and that the investigation has been going on for a while now. So who knows how far the accusations go back.

The school owner bit sounds strange. If he were the owner won't he have have teaching staff doing most of the work for him and thus not have a huge amount to contact with the students? I suppose he could be a one man show. But at 69 if I were teaching, my clientele would not be anyone under the age of 25 and certainly not anyone without a specific goal in mind.
