Golden week...

Postby Coligny » Fri Mar 19, 2010 10:08 pm

Being unable to go closer to my wife's family... unless we move our bed directly in their bedroom upstairs...

Were kinda short on idea were to go... I still have the option to simulate a woodworking accident at last resort... but does anybody of you'z got an idea of some place to go that won't be too crowded ?

Any idea can do preferably in japan... (I think Tokyo might be really quite... but with most of them shop closed... not sure it'sa good idea)

Hokkaido or Sendai maybe?

Central Tokyo or Osaka are the quietest places during Golden Week.

Before bidness intruded, we were thinking Seoul. A stay there in a luxury hotel would set you back less than a trip somewhere on the shinkansen, and you'd be farther from the in-laws.

-catone
-plus, the won is so cheap you could treat yourself to a case of genital warts and some bottled boiled-cat extract. The delights of Kankoku!

What sort of thing were you wanting to do? Chill, shop, surf, onsen? That really depends on you and will affect the sort of suggestions you get.

For Golden Week, I love to go camping with a big group of people at Niijima Island (Part of the Izu Islands off Tokyo). That is usually pretty mellow with surfing, riding bikes, outdoor onsens, cooking outdoors and plenty of food. But if you are not into camping there are a bunch of minshukus that are interesting.

But it is not a glamour holiday like Kankoku would be. Don't forget that in Kankoku, you can get all your plastic surgery done pretty cheap too. Botox and a spa treatment or twelve. But you have to put up with the constant smell of kimchee in the air, metal chopsticks and the fuyu sonata groupies.

We have been to Saipan/Guam and had a great time. That is really quiet, lovely beaches and pretty cheap package deals but you do have to put up with the "karaoke bar" brothels and the required half day shopping trip at the sponsored duty free mall. But that too is an overseas trip.

I saw this thread and got all excited, but then I noticed there was a "k" on the end of the second word....Still, every week is Golden Week for me (except the traffic!), so it's hard to get into the mood.

Yeah, I went a Seoul last month, a-r 3 night at the Paris Hilton for 4 man each... Problem is we left Toyohashi with sunny 15 degree afternoon to land in a ball freezing snowstorm... I think one of me balls haven't thawed yet... Should have tried the local grease suction surgerie instead of the kimchi BBQs...

Will explore the remote abandonned island / horror movie scenario kind of vacations... I'm sure I found a website with maps of abandonned japanese theme park or giant factories. Problem is i'm into relax chilling urban / industrial ruins explorations while me other 3/4 is more into 8-22 commando style japanese bus tour where your are told when to eat sleep and shit. Which is something that drive me on edge of suicide (and not metaphorically. Paying to be treated like a prisonner with no hope to escape is beyond what i can stand).

It sounds to me like your best option is to go on vacation from your wife not with her.

i thought, by definition, that's what a vacation was.

The single worst thing about being in a serious relationship for me is the whole vacation thing.

Get married. Then you can go on vacation from your wife with your girlfriend. :p
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

Shirakami Sanchi

Postby hairygateau » Fri Apr 02, 2010 10:15 pm

Shirakami Sanchi. Anybody been? considering it for myself and mrs hairy (+ car). looks like mountains, forests etc but a tad worried about all the 'world heritage' mumble-swerve which to me equates to 1bn locals all piling onto the roads as soon as the hotels kick out. interested to hear if anyone has attempted it in GW.
