Hikari TV - multiple boxes

Postby GomiGirl » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:39 pm

Got a question about Hikari TV.

If you have two decoder boxes in the house, can you be watching different stations in different rooms?

Do you have to let your provider know you have an additional box - ie are they wanting to charge more for this?

Cos of the new TV, I need a new decoder box (Upgrading to a PM-700 from a PM-300). I own the PM-300 as I bought it outright a few years ago. The PM-700 I have to pay about 500 yen a month for.

The set up is:
Wall -> Modem (NTT) -> Switch -> computer
-> Cable TV box

I am going to run a test by running an extra ethernet cable out of the switch - it has plenty of spare ports on it. So there would be two cable TV boxes and the computer.

Logically it should work from a network point of view, but my question is has anybody else done this?

If not, how do you have cable in the living room and the bedroom?

I am not sure about Hikari TV but with standard cable you have to put a card into the decoder box in order to activate it. Even if I had a second cable box I couldn't use it as I have only one card.

On a bit of a different note, Discovery Channel and Animal Planet are going to disappear from Hikari TV as of the end of this month. :( That accounts for 50% of the channels I actually watch on cable so it would really suck if they were gone. :( I don't know why this is happening but I am guessing Hikari TV and Discovery Network (or whatever it is called) couldn't agree on a price to renew their contract. Hopefully they get that worked out.

If you have two boxes you can watch two channels on different TVs but you have to rent or buy the other box.

I'm not sure if you have to notify NTT of a second box, most likely you do(TIJ). I don't think they will charge you for it unless you rent it from them. Since you own one box and rent the other I think they should both work.

I have a love/hate thing going on with hikari TV. The ads are retarded and appear on every channel and the free movies VS the pay movies just doesn't make any fucking sense.

GG when you activate your new box you'll have to enter an account code that they'll provide you with so I doubt it's gonna work unless the Hikari people are really stupid.
And yeah, losing Discovery, AP, CNN and Movie Plus sucks....seems like a content war might be going on with Skapa.
