I am guessing that the outdoor vending machines in Japan don't have strong metal cages around them like the few I see here?

Yeah, I know, I know. I was trying to be ironic and cynical. Around here, we see two kinds of vending machines outdoors: ones with cages around them, and ones that have been smashed with a baseball bat.
