A Stimulating Educational Environment

Postby Mulboyne » Sun Apr 18, 2010 8:01 am

Itai News has highlighted a quirky story in the Asahi (Japanese). The Morioka Daini High School is officially a mixed education establishment and yet it currently has no male pupils in a student body of 603. Vice Principal Masaaki Sakiyama says they have had no male applications and many current students are under the impression they are at a single-sex school. As it turns out, this is by no means a new situation. The school was founded in 1897 for girls but became co-educational in 1950. The first year saw numbers split roughly evenly but the number of male applicants quickly dropped so, by 1961, only 7 boys graduated. Since then, no more boys have entered the school and records show that the total who did stands at 323. The Asahi asks Vice Principal Sakiyama how the school would respond to an application from a boy today. He replies that they would consider it seriously but would point out that they have no sports facilities for football or baseball.

I like the title you chose, Mulboyne. It would be exactly that if you were the first and only male student there.:p
His [Brendan Behan's] last words were to several nuns standing over his bed, "God bless you, may your sons all be bishops."
