Yomiuri: Fences to help kids feel safe at Tokyo parks
To protect children from suspicious individuals loitering around parks, the Tokyo metropolitan government plans to build fences around playgrounds, starting this fiscal year. The move, an unusual step for a local government, comes in response to an increase in the number of crimes targeting young children in recent years. Criminologists say the fences would allow children to play with a sense of security, but other experts warn the fenced-off areas could become isolated from the surrounding community...The fences likely will be about 1.8 meters tall and made of metal or wood. They will be designed to make it difficult for children to climb over them.
