NJR but Sarah Colwill, mentioned on the Colbert Report, is suffering from foreign accent syndrome. Even more interesting is the Croatian girl who woke up from a coma speaking German.

Maybe it's past-life syndrome.:spin:

Mulby, do you remember the Geordie woman who woke up from a coma and started speaking with a Jamaican accent? http://www.abc.net.au/worldtoday/content/2006/s1679266.htm

(Which is easy. Just say 'beer can' and it sounds like 'bacon' in a Jamaican accent)

I'd rather wake up with an Uchinaaguchi accent, it'd be such a hit at the office...

BTW, anyone else think that the Uchinaaguchi accent makes Byron sound more of a foreigner than he is?

From what I've read, and the locals I've spoken to, he comes across as an all-or-nothing sort. Feeling unaccepted as a Japanese, he went to the US to be an American. Feeling unable to give himself completely over to uber-Americanism, he moved back to Okinawa and immersed himself in the dead culture of the former Ryukyu Kingdom. Sure, it still exists to entertain tourists and and maintain some sort of regional identity, but to live in a world where one speaks only Uchinaguchi, wears only Ryukyuan clothing, and partakes in none of the cultural blends that have come to characterize Okinawa, seems to be paradoxically a bit unadapted...

Sounds like he's been through some pretty tough times and if that's the way he feels best handling those experiences, all good to him. I thought he was absolutely incredible. It's the first time I've really heard Uchinaaguchi. I hope he keeps it alive and spreads the word.

I think a lot of these tales are bullshit and people are reading into them what they want. Someone comes out of a coma with fucked up speech and people who really don't know any better think she sounds Chinese. I remember seeing a local news report in Seattle about a lady who woke up with an English accent. They interviewed her and she sounded less English than Dick Van Dyke in "Mary Poppins". He accent sounded weird but certainly not English.

Mike Oxlong spotted an amusing clip of Stephen Colbert referring to this case of Foreign Accent Syndrome over in this thread.
