um.... no. cali is cali and represents the USA about as well as NYC. Venture into the middle where most of the 'mericans live and you will discover that the country club club is alive and well.

What part of "I grew up in NYC with a very diverse group of friends" did you not understand?

I'm willing to bet that most of your bilingual friends aren't truly bilingual. They can probably shoot the shit with mom and dad a little and order in an ethnic restaurant, but I doubt they could discuss politics or read a novel. If so, you're hanging out with a group that is very unrepresentative.
