[floatl][/floatl]The executive committee of GREEN TOKYO Gundam Project has given the go-ahead for a plan to erect an 18 metre model of RX-78-2 from Mobile Suit Gundam in Shiokaze Park near Odaiba Station. Work will start in July and the finished model will be equipped with flashing lights, a moving head and jets which will shoot mist from various orifices. You might be wondering why an organization dedicated to tree-planting wants to put a huge metal and fibreglass model in a park but a spokesman said they hope to encourage Gundam fans to visit the park and enjoy a bit of greenery along with the statue. The major costs will be borne by Bandai Namco who put forward the proposal as part of their Gundam 30th anniversary celebrations and it will likely become a focal point for related events later in the year.
Isn't it about time that the Japanese Self-defense force starts investing money in Mobil Armor technology? Imagine what Honda and Mitsubishi could do if it had military funding again.
I am not really sure where I am going, I just hope that when I get there, I can sit down because I am sure my feet will be tired.

What 'orifices' will steam shoot out?

I got the story from here (Japanese) but I wish I'd just used Google since it was already written up in English some days earlier and with a better picture:
The scale of Gundam monuments gets bigger and bigger each year... eventually they're going to make one twice as big as intended.
On another note, I think in the cartoons they're actually drawn quite a bit larger than 18 meters / ~60 feet. Either that or anime characters are tiny.
