Facial hair is threatening to the ever-growing herd of herbivore males. It implies that the hairy guys have a certain amount of testosterone left, which could make them potentially aggressive and dangerous to deal with.

Meh. In the US, guys grow beards to: a) compensate for their baldness (thus creating the illusion that someone has grabbed them by the chin - heh - and given it a yank - double heh - pulling all their hair southward); and b) herbivore males who cultivate "love-patch" entities of various sorts.

As for Japan, well, I gotsta say: facial hair and East Asian-osity just doesn't mix. Instant Fu Manchu effect. When I see those shitty little under-the-jaw patches, I really have to restrain myself from reaching for the straight razor I normally carry with me.

edit: I don't really carry a straight razor. Not even a Leatherman. Just my gaijin card, driver's license, Suica, and some baksheesh money in a pouch around my neck.
