That is more of a statement on how badly Argentina was doing that day more than a testament of Japan's skill.

Somebody told me that after all the countries had played their first game (16 games) Japan held the dubious record for most fouls committed. Don't know if it's true but they did commit a lot.

I can agree to that...yesterday's game had a lot of high-kicking and sliding tackles from behind. But then again, between Japan and Korea, it was with the friendliest intentions and utmost sincerity.

It seems Okada is really, properly shitting himself at the thought of being annihilated by us.

Good.

I am trying to find out which channel or network will be covering the world cup. I just noticed that WOWOW will only show the other teams in Japan's group games. June 19th Netherlands and Norway. Will the games be on skyperfect, or does anybody know. I am now stuck with this damn E2 which really sucks and have a feeling I will miss out of the games this year.

Sorry, was referring to the 98 World Cup, when Okada was the skipper. He only got the job this time because Osim had a stroke.

Standard operating procedure when challenging a player from behind was to knock him over. If you see their three games at the 98 World Cup you will see that they committed a lot of fouls.

True, must have been quite a tough choice for the organizers:

Well, we just scraped through against Mexico the other day and we play Japan shortly so it could be serious egg on the boat if we let the sons of Nippon grab a win.

I don't want to sound snarky, but most games are being played either very late in the evening or the middle of the night, so I was hoping to record and watch them after the fact. Also not all cities in Japan have happening sports bars that you can walk into and pull up a bar stool and watch live soccer.
I did find that skyperfectv E2 will be carrying the games on channels 799-804.

Greji, I hear they are running the lines as we speak. I've got this damn hamster wheel propelling my computer, otherwise I'd never be able to access FG.

The Other Final

Postby Behan » Sat May 29, 2010 3:53 pm

Speaking of Japan, the Netherlands, and FIFA rankings.....

It's old news, but interesting...

The movie was made after the Netherlands, a team that normally qualifies, failed to do so for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Kramer, the director, couldn't cheer on the Dutch side during the World Cup, so decided to make a documentary about teams that were worse than the Netherlands, and chose these two. The game was played on the morning of the 2002 World Cup Final between Germany and Brazil
(Wikipedia)

At the time they were at the bottom of the FIFA rankings.

If Japan can somehow retain this one goal lead and win the game, Okada will be a genius and everyone will think Japan can win the World cup, and the English will kill themselves. But I don't think they can hold the lead. It looked at the end of the half that England had the majority of scoring chances and ball control.
Ohkubo looks like a crazy man out there. At one point his eyes were blinking uncontrollably.

What a shitty way to lose a game. Not one but two own goals. If I were an England fan, I wouldn't be celebrating this win. Some loud mouths on Japan Today are criticizing the Japanese team for not being able to beat a bored England team. I can't wait to hear what they have to say when the US beats them in their first match of the WC.

"Plucky World Cup minnows England overcame a free-scoring Japan team in a tense pre-tournament match. The Asia giants found the net at will but couldn't put away the underdogs and now must have some doubts about their status as favourites for the last four".

Or something like that.

This was a final selection match for the England team so players had something to prove. The squad of 30 will be reduced to 23 and some big names like Joe Cole aren't guaranteed a place. On the other hand, it was clear that some were concerned about getting injured on a wet surface so close to the main event.

I suspect that England will disappoint this year. We had a better squad in 2002 and looked lively before Brazil put us out in Shizuoka. 2006 wasn't a bad squad either but we had no gameplan and lost to a smarter Portugal. This manager has done well to create a decent work ethic but I just don't think we have the players to challenge this year on current form.

As for Japan, there was some decent stuff in defence but what the hell was the handball all about? Which footballer playing professionally reacts to a ball going above him by sticking his hand in the air?

Good news: Japan managed 3 goals to England's nil.
Bad news: Still need to work out that whole "my goal / your goal" thing.

There appear to be a lot of complaints about the Adidas "Jabulani" ballwhich is the official World Cup selection. There was a similar issue four years ago and Adidas has pointed out that teams have had months to raise any issues they might have. However, there seems to be some general agreement that it behaves oddly at altitude (an issue in South Africa) so it'll be interesting if it remains a talking point once the Cup i sunderway.

There has been a tragic lack of paint-on world cup football shirts this time around. Both Greji and I are disappointed.

That is quite the accomplishment for Tulio, not only did he score another own goal, but he was also able to take out Drogba all within a 5 minutes span.

Drogba was almost instantly ruled out but the Ivory Coast is hoping to strap him up somehow.

Drogba still hasn't been formally ruled out so there's a chance the Ivory Coast are still hoping to keep him in the squad.

I was actually quite relieved that England came out of their match against Japan unscathed. That's not to bring up some hoary cliche about kamikaze tackling but some teams don't always understand what a friendly is supposed to be about. If a team is underperforming, feeling the pressure and has a weak manager - Japan currently ticks all those boxes - then they often go overboard trying to prove themselves against the world's best. The most vulnerable players are attackers like Drogba.

Tulio's challenge was ridiculous for a friendly. Having said that, shit does happen and, in another game, Drogba wouldn't have fallen awkwardly. All players are slightly nervous of getting injured ahead of a big tournament and there is something to received sporting wisdom that you're more likely to pick up injuries when you are trying to avoid them. As it is, England survived their match against Japan but then lost their captain to a training ground accident.
