Japan's prime minister steps down over base row

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Wed Jun 02, 2010 12:41 pm

Well, that didn't take long.

TOKYO – Embattled Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama said Wednesday he was resigning over his broken campaign promise to move a U.S. Marine base off the southern island of Okinawa.

The prime minister faced growing pressure from within his own party to resign ahead of July's upper house elections. His approval ratings had plummeted over his bungled handling of the relocation of the Marine Air Station Futenma, which reinforced his public image as an indecisive leader.

Hatoyama is the fourth Japanese prime minister to resign in four years.

Until Tuesday night, Hatoyama insisted he would stay on while intermittently holding talks with key members of his Democratic Party of Japan. But on Wednesday morning, after eight months in office, Hatoyama faced the nation to say he was stepping down.

"Since last year's elections, I tried to change politics in which the people of Japan would be the main characters," he told a news conference broadcast nationwide. But he conceded his efforts fell short.

"That's mainly because of my failings," he said.

Hatoyama, 63, cited two main reasons for his resignation: the Futenma issue, which led to the dismissal of one of his Cabinet members who could not accept his decision, and a political funding scandal. In that incident, two of his aides were convicted of falsifying political contribution reports and sentenced to suspended prison terms. Hatoyama himself did not face charges in the case, but it tainted his image. (more)

WTF? When will Japan's elected officials realize that you don't have to resign after every minor political failure.

What? When did cutting and pasting news stories on FG become such a fierce competition?

It's not so much a competition as much as I feel silly for reposting the same article.

I was wondering when Hatoyama would get caught in the revolving door. Damn thing is spinning faster and faster.

Have we had a PM that lasted longer than a year since Koizumi?

Not surprising really. Most everyone's temp staff nowadays, thanks to Koizumi.

At least the man stepped down with some dignity and integrity. (There is another powerful so called leader who made many promises and never lived up to it. I wish he would step down immediately also). Am I surprised by all of this, Nope. But I do remember back in the early 90's when it seemed like Japan was getting a new PM every week, seems like we're on that road again.

Hatoyama has been one huge failure from the start. He may say he is resigning over this one issue but the reality is that his government's laundry list of failures and backtracking have resulted in a popularity rating that is low even by Japanese political standards.

Au contraire, I think they're going to have to raise the consumption tax otherwise the economy is really going to gurgle down the shitter. Of course if they do that without eliminating unnecessary spending at the same time we're fucked anyway, but if through some miracle of sudden political enlightenment they manage to do both Japan might even have a chance.

But ... they probably should wait for the MacPros ...

They will raise the tax, instead of reducing spending at the same time they will blast the money on some feel good/ bring vote bullshit while at the same time it kills consumption thus suffocating even more the economy...

I agree that they might not manage to reduce spending by a sufficient amount, but I don't think a small boost in the consumption tax ... say, to 7.5% ... will have any serious long-term affect on consumption. The base price of most goods has come down enough to make it viable. It might even have to go to 10% to have the desired effect.

But the standard VAT in France (or "TVA" ... you French never put anything in the right order) is 19.6%! If you look at VAT levels around the world, very few are below 10%.

Japan is in serious, serious debt, and the money will have to come from somewhere eventually. The debt may not be entirely the fault of the man and woman in the street, but there's no evading the fact that it is they who will have to pay at least part of it off.

I know it sucks, but I don't think there's any way around it.

Think about what the world would be like if George Bush committed political harikari every time he let something get screwed up... he wouldn't have even made it until 9/11.

The US is really lagging far behind Japan in the area of top boss resignations. I mean all the US has to show in this illustrious category is Nixon, with an honorable mention for Bill Clinton's cigar.
