'Spintronics'

Image 'Spintronics' Could Enable A New Generation Of Electronic Devices, Physicists Say2003-08-11 / Stanford News
Moore's Law - a dictum of the electronics industry that says the number of transistors that fit on a computer chip will double every 18 months - may soon face some fundamental roadblocks.... electronic devices are plagued by a big problem: energy loss, or dissipation, as signals pass from one transistor to the next...Theoretical physicists at Stanford and the University of Tokyo think they've found a way to solve the dissipation problem...

See the QT video here of 'Spintronics' effect.

I was a mobile developers conference in the US a few weeks ago and a few of the speakers were analysts from Yankie group etc. They all mentioned Moore's law and suggested that this will continue for the next few years at least.

Battery life of devices is still an issue in the US, but from witnessing the improvements that DoCoMo was able to achieve between the first and second generation of FOMA handsets, there seems to be life in the old theory for a while at least. The new organic screens will also help.
