World Cup

Postby canman » Sun Jun 13, 2010 10:52 pm

I'm not sure how many of you are following the world cup. Luckily here in Japan we are able to watch two games, the 8:30 and the 11:00pm game. Now if they could only get rid of those damn horns. I must congratulate sky perfectv for airing all the games, and providing the English commentary with the game, but I have trouble hearing what they are saying. Is this bothering anyone else, or is it just me.
Also I mistakenly recorded the US vs England game in Japanese, man these Japanese announcers are piss poor. They don't explain what is going on, they keep talking about inane topics like how much this player is sweating. They don't know the players names and only keep repeating the few players they do know. Since the US players are not well known, they hardly even mentioned then by name. And when they did, they mispronounced the names. For example on player whose name is Findly, was incorrectly called, Find ly, as in find. Thank goodness we are able to switch to subchannel.

I kinda dig the horns. I start imagining that swarms of giant hornets are buzzing around the stadium waiting to pick off limbs from the losing team.

Don't tell a lie. Why do you understand what they said, despite you cannot hear all what they were saying. I too watched the game. but they never had done such a disrespectful announcement like you alleged.

It's not just you Canman.

Apparently FIFA is considering banning the blowing of "bubuzela" horns at games. The noise is interfering with all kinds of communication – between the players, coach and players, and announcements for broadcast, as you mention.

I just read that Fifa, is now thinking of banning the horns at games, due to many complaints from viewers. I really don't like them, but put the commentator in a booth or something so that we can hear what is being said. I've had a few people say just hit the mute button, but can you tell me any other sporting event where you have to mute the sound because it is so annoying, other than the broadcast team for the Chicago White Sox!:winkb:

Every drunk fan attending a game in South Africa should piss in the nearest vuvuzela to silence the horn.

2-0 to England but we followed the Japanese practice of sharing the goals with our opponents to maintain the wa.

Speaking of annoying horns at world sporting events, remember the 1998 Nagano winter Olympics?

100 times worse because the tiny plastic horns were all set at some fingernails-on-chalkboard-like pitch, like a little brat playing some kind of kiddie accordion while holding down all the flat keys at the same time. It wasn't the volume, it was just some sort of cruel joke by the horn manufacturers.

Maybe not as loud without a stadium channeling everything, but we just know some Japanese commentators will jump on the anti-horn bandwagon, and it's inevitable that someone at some point will say this kind of thing "would never happen in Japan", maybe throw in something about Africans. The pot calls the kettle nigger?

And yes, Japanese sports commnetary sucks if the sport is anything other than baseball (and even then). I know because even I could understand basically everything being said after half-finishing Japanese for Busy People 1.

"My, that was a fast shot."
"Yes, wasn't it?"
"Yes, very fast."
"Very"
"That was a powerful shot."
"Yes powerful."
"Wasn't it?"
"Very strong."
"Indeed."

Secondly, if you enjoy listening to two hacks who don't know what hey are talking about then it is your right, but the British announcers that are calling the games are nothing but professional. Whereas the Japanese announcers couldn't stop talking about Beckham, even though he wan't even playing.
Take, just f$ck off, tonight you will be crying when your chrysanthemum boys get their asses handed to them by Cameroon. Enjoy your crappy commentary as they mispronounce, or don't even know the Cameroon players names.

I too, noticed that they mentioned Beckham quite a bit, but hey, he is popular in Japan, so that can be expected. You know how that goes in Japan, the person that usually has a world wide recognition status is instantly popular in Japan and other individuals just take a backseat.(can anyone remember Titanic?) Part of it has to do with marketing. Just have to deal with that monochromatic part of Japan. Having said all that, personally I find that those hornet screaming horns drive me nuts as well as the Japanese commentators (don't know which is worse at this point) when it gets too much to bear, I just hit the mute button to save my sanity!

I thought I was watching the History Channel when they kept having shots of Zidane during the Algeria-Serbia game. The nostalgia-ridden media whores are obsessed with the past glories.

Any bets on tonight's Cameroon game?

When your team doesn't win any games, or score any points in the World Cup, I could see where the media whores might be hard pressed to come up with material to write about.....

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Mulboyne again.

In watching the US vs England game, I was dreading the commentary since it was going to be shown on US broadcast TV and thus I suspected the commentary would follow the standard US style of 'family problems/tragedy makes sports more heroic" where they comment about how someone is really doing well considering that the wife of his second cousin's was in an accident or has/had cancer or other health problem last year...while ignoring these sort of things are statistically common place within any group of ten people or larger and the rest of society doesn't break down when these sort of things happen to non sports professionals...but it turned out they ESPN had some Brits doing the commentary and they kept the more mawkish sentiments to a minimum.

And I find the horns a bit much after a while too.

One of the advantages of the vuvuzelas is that they nearly drown out the inane Japanese commentary. I think they should be compulsory in every Japanese tv program. Fair play, for big sporting events NHK do usually have commentators who actually know what they are talking about - ex players, coaches etc .. but the other channels tend to stick to the tried and tested formation of ( left to right ), some random talento, dumb chick with big tits, opinionated oyaji, with none of them really understanding what they are watching, but talking shit anyway.

Martin Tyler is doing the ESPN broadcasts this year. He had been one of the better announcers for years.
