'twas the gag about hard working crackers.

I'm not planning on going with Iphone again. I've had a blackberry for work for the past 3 weeks and it does 2 core things that the Iphone/softbank borks.

Country Code "+" Dialing
If you're on a exchange corporate server you have access to everyone's phone number in the global contacts, on world standard format. Except Japan iphone/softbank. Write down the number and 010 it. Local non + numbers wont work overseas without changes.
No issue with blackberry.

Email Mojibake.
Theme/topic in emails is stuffed. The email from the phone is converted by the mail server and then sent off. All fine and you can see from the email trace that the message the subject header and message is translated (UC-JP? sorry not at work yet) but the topic is not specified in the topic header. Sorting emails by theme is now stuffed. They would be better off not using topic at all than sending garbage.
No issue with blackberry.

Yes the browser is a fiddly, yes there is very little apps, the GPS is a dog etc. but I now don't care. A phone and email that works. Anything else can wait until later. I would probably be only missing a couple of apps that I would like to have mobile. A dictionary, RDP. Maybe these things are a non issue on a jailbreak, but I did buy the Iphone because I'm over hacking phones.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

Glad to see that not everyone has prostrated themselves before the iPhone altar!

I'm a Blackberry user myself, and I stick with it for one main reason: the keyboard. It has actual, physical clickety-keys in standard QWERTY layout. And although they're small, they're designed well enough that even a ham-fisted typist like myself can quickly enter long-ish text in both English and Japanese with minimum stress. Really don't like the touch-panel keys on the iPhone.

Personally, I HATE the Blackberry keyboard. I have big thumbs and it's hard to type quickly. I LOVE my iphone keyboard and I can type a LOT in a short amount of time. It's even better now that I turned on the click noise so I can hear clicks as I type.

Now, I'm not a person that has one and just played with the other. I have a Blackberry for work and my iPhone for personal and I use the Blackberry more than my iPhone.

OK, I just did some typing on my BlackBerry while paying attention to see if I could figure out why it's so comfortable for me. It turns out I'm sort of typing with my thumbnails (which aren't long, but do extend a teeny bit beyond the ends of my thumbs). For some reason that works really well for me, and I can type surprisingly fast that way.

I suppose if I was forced to type on an iPhone for months I'd get the hang of it. But I have an iPod Touch with the same type of keyboard as the iPhone, and I don't get along with that either.

Different strokes ...

I see what you mean. That was the same reason J-gyarus didn't like using the iPhone when it was first released in Japan. (Not making a dig, mind you.)

The more I think about the way Apple is behaving with their iPhone (etc) platform the less I like the company and the more determined I am to buy something besides an iPhone for my next phone. It's very likely that I'll end up with an Android phone on Docomo. Fixes two problems -- shitty Softbank service and shitty Apple control freak policies.

It's going to be great to see Android evolve over the next year and see where Google leads the platform. Good chance I'll depart from Apple hardware in the summer of 2011 when my current Softbank contract expires.

I have yet to see someone who is satisfied switching services from Docomo to Softwank -- especially the reception --. Everyone I know tells me that it's a nightmare and they regret doing so.

Things with Softbank depend very much on where you are.

In Osaka reception is fine really, apart from the occasional dropped call when driving. A good friend who now lives & works in Shibuya had nothing but problems. Horrible reception and no service at all on many weekends. Complete disaster and he switched back to Docomo. In rural areas Docomo is way better too, and out on the water as well. I don't spend time in Shibuya but I am out on the water fairly often and I hang out in rural Okayama on summer weekends.

Docomo has also (fairly quietly) started making it easier to use non-Docomo handsets on their network. You can't get their cheaper unlimited data plans (yet) but their 13,000yen unlimited one for PC/tethering use works fine. There's a good chance I'll buy an unlocked Android phone from HK and use that on Docomo from sometime in 2011.

I'm not really interested in Blackberry. It's another phone tied to a single maker who likes to keep things fairly tightly locked down. The browser also sucks ass, though I hear the latest version is somewhat better.

The new Windows 7 Mobile interests me to some extent but I'm mostly interested in Android.

The browser is fiddly, to be sure. But I only use it occasionally to grab some info off the net. Works OK for that.

You seem to be a "power user," so I can understand where you're coming from. But for someone who just wants a smartphone that reliably does the basics just about anywhere, without the fashionable coolness of the iPhone, the BlackBerry does the job. Works for me, anyway.

Never had a problem that a quick battery-pull reset couldn't cure! :p

The phone you describe isn't really a "smartphone" IMO, it's a fashionphone/dumbphone that happens to work with Exchange Server for email. This isn't a personal attack in any way, I just want more from my phone.

One thing I can't complain about with the iPhone is stability. The OS pretty much never crashes, even though it has been jailbroken, unlocked, and had a pile of unofficial stuff done to it. Not too surprising considering it is essentially a BSD kernel at its core.

Now for a different kind of iPhone hysteria The Yomiuri reports (Japanese) that a man complained to another passenger who was using his iPhone on a crowded train. The other man ignored him and, when they both got off at Takadanobaba Station, a fight broke out. On being hit, the iPhone user stumbled and struck a train which was just pulling in to the platform, breaking his hand. The other man was arrested.

There must be more to it then just using a iPhone on a crowded town? Was he taking pictures with it? Bumping into others while the train was in motion instead of holding on to a handhold? Playing loud music, videos, or other noises? Playing a video or app that strobed the display and triggered a seizure? Conked someone on the head with his iPhone?

I have use my iPhone on crowded Japanese trains countless times, quietly without disturbing anyone, and no one has ever complained or been noticeable upset about it. So there must be more to the story.

I have also seen countless Japanese men and women playing with lots of smartphones (including iPhones) and portable gaming units (like DS & PSP) on crowded Japanese trains and no one bats an eye.

It just take one psychopath to kill you dead... it's more a matter of bad luck rather than Iphone... It's like grand'ma pissed off by gal putting makeup on the train... More often than not it's more aboot jealousy than public transportation etiquette... and then you have mominlaw who pity them (fools) as back in her days she didn't need 10 kilos of petrochemicals tested on monkeys anus to look good...

There are no details but, at a guess, perhaps it was the latter because some people use two hands to type on the iPhone. Perhaps a bigger surprise is the fact the guy's device was identified as an iPhone at all. The Yomiuri that it was a significant enough detail to include in their headline. Later reports didn't mention it at all.

The violence really kicked off because the irritated guy didn't like the way the iPhone user replied to him. I think we can safely conclude that the iPhone itself is a MacGuffin in this drama.
