Just wondering if any of you attend obon ceremonies?
I did yesterday. Took a nenkyu and went with the wife to her mother's grave. Interesting is Japanese culture. Makes me glad to be here in a way to learn new cultural traditions.

Obon is nice. I liked it, thought it was interesting. Also noticed different families celebrate it differently, even at different times of day.

I was walking my dog through the neighborhood last night and came upon the first year after the death of someone celebration.. it looked like a cult.. the priest was chanting in a very loud voice, people where everywhere, smoke was all over the place.. there was a flashing light that spun round and round and was blue, pink, and green, reminded me of a disco. Amazing.

Obon? That's like a hot Halloween without any costumes or fun. Yeah, yeah, yeah, ok, I'll wash the grave and eaten alive by the HUNGRY bugs in the graveyard, but hell, they ain't my ancestors. It's not like I wanna watch bon-odori for HOURS standing in the heat.

Obon is time for "celebrating" bikini beach babes and hanging by the pool.

I loved that place when I was a kid. Stroll through having a good look at all the grotesque forms of torture. Last time I visited though it had been turned into a boat ride. Couldn't stop and stare at your favourite examples of nastiness.
