I no longer commute, but I cannot count the number of times I almost passed out from the fetid fumes of last night's decaying yakitori and rice breath along with stale beer burps and farts - that was always a treat.
And when a sarari-man hasn't had a chance to bathe for a day or two, the old toupee or bar-code comb-over can get quite rancid... (don't even get me started on the BO and flowing sweat on a packed commuter train in summer)

There is actually some interesting genetic info about this:

http://www.lab-times.org/editorial/e_124.html

Some of it is no doubt Nihonjinron, but genetically speaking people with dry ear wax don't have the same sweat as those with wet ear wax. The result is that those with dry ear wax seem to have less under-arm BO.

Of course this has no affect at all on bad breath or general body stench...

Part of the problem is also bathing customs. Japanese say they bathe at night to wash away the day's grime and keep the bedding clean. Thing is, they sweat at night, and then get up and with 6 hours of sweat already on them, get dressed and commute to work with us freshly showered FGs. When they've been drinking dai-san "beer" and eating squid snacks the night(s) before, they got a funk going on...

Yeah... mix this with their traditionnal mating ritual... bukakke, golden shower... and I can understand that coworkers don't kiss hello each other in the morning...

Wait, everyone knows Japanese don't mate...the birthrate didn't slip for no reason...that's the virtual J-mating ritual...

Draw a big breath and admit it. Japan smells....
...<big snip>...
this is Japan... these are the smells that waft through my Japanese remembrances.
The honey wagon . . .
"Reek" is a powerful word. But in this case not powerful enough. We need fresher, more compelling language to describe the honey wagon. Like . . .
Reektacular. Reektastic. Reekmongulous.
A "honey wagon" is a sweet euphemism for a septic truck...

That is soooo gross, but I totally agree. When I ask some of my friends, they think that 1) there is no need to bathe in the morning, they bathed the night before, therefore they are already clean, even in this agonizing humidity, I have to shower sometimes 3 times a day. How anyone can go in this weather once a day is so beyond me.
2) they think no other race is as clean as they are!
3) this problem extends to the High school, especially the boys!!!!
4) I personally, can almost tell who showered or not, on the morning commute, when they got that stale granny closet mothball smell, you know what's up?

In Thailand it's a custom to offer houseguests a shower upon arrival.

Do they have a ritual also or proper bathing etiquette that they have to follow?
Also every time I go to the states, I load up on $50 worth of hygiene products. Especially in Japan there is nothing for men except that God horrible "Gatsby" those products make "4711" look like Chanel!

In Germany too, but golden shower is really a private thing that don't exactly improve the situation in tropical countries...

The conclusion is that we Japanese can smell what you gaijin dudes cannot smell, on the contrary you gaijin can smell what Japanese cannot smell.

with us freshly showered FGs.

even in this agonizing humidity, I have to shower sometimes 3 times a day.

As I said above, regardless of how many times you gaijins shower, you never can erase peculiar-to-gaijin odor.

So you're saying that our water bills are higher? Wait a second, in your lifetime, have you ever encountered a "fellow Nihonjin" (reason for quotes is obvious....it's called sarcasm, btw) who smelled like he/she's been camped out in someone's poop chute for a month? Sure you have. However, your need to feel superior blocks your ability to recognize this, and you attribute the "smell" to the foreigner. You really need to accept this inferiority complex you carry with you. You're the one making yourself feel inferior. Hence, the need to try to conquer a willing white woman, which in your mind will allow you to elevate yourself to the white man's level.

I was invited at a small get together last night. Also when you ad to that how many Japanese don't like using the A/C or keep the inside temperature almost equal to the outside temperature, you are bound to have a bad day, especially if you went to a Mexican bar for appetizers and a Korean restaurant for dinner and a British pub afterwards scarfing down 5 pints of Guinness, you are really asking for it!

I'm kinda surprised by this thread. When it started, I really expected us to start making death threats to each other regarding our personal choices of underarm freshness, yet that has not happened; with the exception of Take trying to offer his hilarious 2 yen. I kinda expected to see something like, "Dude, you use that brand? Only sissy bitches who cram frozen cucumbers up their asses use that brand."

Well, I bought the new Adidas anti-perspirant and from first hand experience I can tell you it doesn't work. It doesn't stop you from sweating and the it doesn't mask the smell of sweat after a long day. So I will go back to my Old spice Arctic chill. It does work all day long. Luckily I stocked up on it last time I was on Misawa base.
