Akihabara mass murderer says he's sorry

Postby sublight » Fri Jan 29, 2010 11:08 am

"My bad."

Japan Times: Kato sorry for Akihabara massacre

Tomohiro Kato pleaded guilty Thursday to murdering seven people and injuring 10 in Tokyo's popular Akihabara electronics district in June 2008.

With the guilty plea, the trial at the Tokyo District Court will now turn on whether the 27-year-old's mental condition at the time of the massacre was stable enough to assign criminal responsibility. This determination will influence his sentence, which could be the death penalty.

"First of all, I would like to apologize to those who have passed away, to those who were injured and to their families," Kato said as presiding Judge Hiroaki Murayama asked him to enter his plea.

"Although there are some parts that I have no memory of, I admit that I committed (the crime) and that I am the culprit," Kato read from a memo he had prepared in advance. (more)

Meanwhile, a year and a half later, the open-street "pedestrian paradise" that used to draw thousands is still shut down by the police. The NPA is apparently working on the assumption that the best way to keep pedestrians from being killed by cars is to allow cars to drive through while restricting the pedestrians to tightly confined spaces.

Saying Akiba is popular is like saying the people who go there have great social skills.

negative rep is uncalled for! I was just stating that it's ironic that Akihabara is popular whereas those who frequent it generally are not (including myself, sadly).

Someone red-snotted you for that comment? 8-O Wow, that's harsh.

Lucky I didn't post my comment about how there are grounds to argue that Kato, the deranged cu*t, may have performed a community service of sorts.

Yeah, that was harsh. But, hopefully it won't drive anyone to go out for a quick game of pedestrian whack-a-mole and then practice their survival knife kirigami on the survivors.

Akihabara mass murder defendant says he committed crime because of Internet harassment
Mainichi Japan-- July 27, 2010
The defendant in the Akihabara mass murder case of 2008, which left seven dead and 10 injured, has told a court that he committed the crime because he was harassed on an online message board....
...."When I was young, if I couldn't say my multiplication tables, my mother would hold me under the water in the bathtub. When I took too long to eat, she would take my rice, put it on a piece of paper on the floor, and make me eat it from there," he recalled.

Again it's easier to blame someone or something else rather than taking responsibility for your own actions. The world, not just Japan, really needs to put a stop to this mentality.

Hmmm, makes you think, doesn't it.

In this day of "tweets", Facebook updates, blogs posts, RSS news feeds, and texting on the cell phone to name a few, how many of us could go cold turkey and just give up our 24/7 access to the information highway?

I am only an occasional poster on FG, and I don't see too much nonsense going on here (other than the odd goat copulation joke, or the occasional minor troll smackdown), but there are a few gaijin over on GPot for example that are going for world records in terms of post counts, and non-stop trolling.
Obviously some people have more time on their hands for whatever reasons, but hopefully they are getting outside in the real world and interacting with real people, not turning into the nutbars that some of their online personas would seem to indicate.
