Sum 41 singer hospitalized in Japan after attack

Postby Mulboyne » Sat Aug 07, 2010 8:26 am

The frontman for Canadian rock band Sum 41 was reportedly attacked last night in Japan and hospitalized with injuries. The band said Friday on their website Deryck Whibley was attacked late Friday night. They posted on their Twitter account that Whibley was attacked in a bar by three unknown people and Japanese police are investigating. The band had two remaining tour dates scheduled in Osaka, Japan, before closing out the summer with shows in the U.S. and Europe. The alleged attack follows Sum 41's cancellation of several Warped Tour dates in the U.S. because Whibley had come down with a serious case of bronchitis. Whibley, 30, was married to fellow Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne but the couple announced their separation last September.

This is interesting, and kind of unusual. "Rock stars" are usually treated with reserved reverence here.

Facts wanted:

* Were the attackers Japanese or foreign? There is no mention in the reports, but there are some pretty nasty anti-Japanese comments on their facebook page.

* Last night ... the eve of the Hiroshima anniversary. Perhaps some ill-judged comments regarding the bomb?

Curious. Very.

You've been in Japan long enough... when you start thinking Sum 41 is the new AKB48 knock-off...

Alright, I'll crawl back into my hole now.

Sum 41: definitely not my generation, but these guys are pretty good.

There are a number of streaming songs on their official website if anyone's interested. Here 'tis.

no.

Label band, borderline bubble gum punk. They showed up when skateboarding started to become big at the same time as other pop-punk artists like blink 182 and avril levine (who is married to the guy who got attacked). When these bands appeared the skateboarders who were in it for the skating were listing to the ramones, hatebreed, DK, etc.

Ah well .. to each his own.
Maybe I'm just getting too tolerant of the kids in my dotage.

My usual range of listening material is anything from James Taylor to some pretty out-there jazz/fusion, with pockets of classic R&B, funk, blues, and even country in between, so I normally wouldn't even give a band in this genre a chance ... but I thought they were pretty good.

That was just a random thought/possibility. Pure speculation. Drunks in a bar aren't likely to worry about little details like that anyway. White + speaking English = American, or close enough.

It might have gone like: "Hey, Yankee!" "I'm not American, so fuck off!" "You say 'fuck,' fucking Yankee!" "Biff." "Kaboom." "Crunch." (Batman comic style).

It might have been something entirely different. Some guy's girl might have shown an interest and struck up a conversation, for example, and jealousy ensued. I've seen a few punch-ups start for that reason.

Whatever, I'd be very interested to know what the cause was.

Latest tweet:

After an MRI scan, it appears Deryck has slipped a disc in his back once again. Despite doctor's instructions, he has decided to play today's show at Summersonic regardless. Sum 41 will perform at 3:40pm

Slipped disk ... not normally a symptom of being beaten up.

You would imagine that these "rock stars" have hired body guards and entourage while traveling. Something just doesn't add up. I bet he just got drunk, fell, and blamed some random "unknown people."

Pussies.

There might have been a scuffle, but it would be funny if it happened as you describe and the three "unknowns" were just trying to help him up.

The pure fact that they didnt write FOREIGNER or GAIJIN in all caps points to the attack perpetrated by Japanese people.

I don't know. What would make you look like a bigger pussy: getting drunk and falling down or getting beat up by Japanese guys? ;)

How do you come to this conclusion?
The reports we're seeing are not from the Japanese media. It's mostly tweets from the band, so I don't think that line of thinking applies.

If I was a punk rocker and got beat up in Japan I'd be blaming the US Marines.

Apparently, the fight took place in Bar Rock Rock in Osaka and was with members of rapper Everlast's "crew".

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Iraira again.

i know i am a complete bitch for saying this, but really...who gives a fuck. beat up in japan? what'd they do, strip down takeapoo and chase them around with one of those street blockers ala naked guy in the moat?

sk8terboi bands like this LIVE for this shite.

now if something like this happened to the very talented miss celene dion, i'd have to demand full border lockdown until the perps are discovered and brought to justice.

This is starting to look more and more like a non-issue.

I was initially concerned that it might have been a racial thing, but if it's between punks and a rapper's crew, all on the Summer Sonic bill, then there's a 90% chance that it's just thugs on the same wavelength trying to show how tough they are.

I have now officially lost interest.

Just the mass media getting the news from some minor celebrity's Twitter feed.

They wuz 'mericans! Da bums. (reportedly)

After being attacked by three guys in a Japanese bar last week, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley was spotted out in Hollywood last night, walking with a limp.

TMZ has a video up where they spoke to Whibley, who said he didn't know any of the guys who jumped him, but said they were American.

Whibley suffered a slipped disk, causing Sum 41 to cancel their Warped Tour appearances.
