Japan hacking contest scrapped
ZDNet, July 28, 2003
A hacking contest has been cancelled in Japan after critics blasted it for promoting criminal activity, according to a report from news agency the Associated Press.
The contest, scheduled in August, would have teams of students trying to hack into each others computers while protecting their own. It was organized by the Ministry for economy, Trade and Industry, which wanted to raise awareness of security.
But after the ministry received a storm of protest from industry and educational institutions, the contest was cancelled, said the report.

That link talks about some joint military exercise.
:P

China, Russia and three central Asian countries have concluded a week-long joint military exercise to counter international terrorism.

Troops and special counter-terrorist units from five countries including Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan participated in the exercise, which started on August 6.

The last phase of the exercise was held in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, western China, on Monday and Tuesday.

About 1,300 personnel were engaged in drills attacking terrorists in mountainous areas by helicopters and tanks, as well as rescuing hostages.

It was the first time that China held a military practice with foreign forces in its territory.

In the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Central Asia, military extremists, allegedly having links to al-Qaeda, have been responsible for bombings and kidnappings, which has been a destabilizing factor in and around China.
