Caddie too short

Evidently size does matter.

No polite way to say this. Cameron Kiyokawa is small. He's 5-foot-3. Weighs 115 pounds. His friends joke that he has to run around in the shower to get wet.

Kiyokawa's father is small, too. His mother is barely 5 foot. So are his grandmothers on both sides. "I come from small people," the kid said. In fact, if you were to assemble a Kiyokawa family reunion, what you'd have is a long line of people unfamiliar with such things such as top-shelf dust.

Which brings us to this weekend's LPGA golf tournament at Pumpkin Ridge.

He has a 5 handicap and he's played all the best local courses, including Pumpkin Ridge. He's also caddied some as well, and understands the rules, the pace of the game, distances, clubs and etiquette. And these things make him a strong candidate to caddie for the women's professional tournament this week.

So Cameron signed on to caddie this week -- $50 a day, plus tips -- at the Safeway Classic. He was so excited that he showed up 90 minutes early for the 8 a.m. Monday call. The master caddie at Pumpkin Ridge assigned him to Dina Ammaccapane, a 17-year tour grinder who had only $7,489 in earnings in 2009. Still, Cameron was giddy. Ammaccapane had missed four cuts in four tour tries this year. She missed the cut at the Safeway Classic, too, shooting a 156 over two rounds.

Ammaccapane eventually showed up at 4 p.m., where she was directed to her waiting caddie. Cameron walked up, and introduced himself. "She looked at me," he said, "gave me a weird look and didn't say anything." There was an awkward silence.

Then Ammaccapane said it. And I wish she hadn't. So does Cameron. So does his father, Perry, who heard the words and felt his insides hollow out.

Ammaccapane said this: "Do you have anyone bigger?"

There was some initial confusion. Some thought she was joking. This was followed by some discussion between the master caddie and Ammaccapane, who explained that she wanted someone more capable of carrying her 75-pound bag. Ultimately, it's her bag and her golf career, and so the discussion ended with the player announcing, "I would be more comfortable with someone bigger."

115lbs caddie carrying a 75lbs pro bag would be entertaining

WTF "$50 a day"?! Damn, caddie fees have gone DOWN in the past 40 years---I was in the pool of caddies and got $25/day for carrying in PGA tournaments, which is $158 USD adjusted for inflation.

(Then again, the price of translation or engrish teaching has gone down Japan in the past 25 years. As a rule of thumb it was said that Japanese Immigration would look askance at work visa applications for gaijin being paid less than 325,000yen/m.)

Looks like Cameron Kiyokawa has more class than Ammaccapane and the LPGA combined. After the first diss, the LGPA made a lame attempt to rectify the situation with free tickets which Kiyokawa naturally turned down. :)

Canzano blog: Update... "Small" caddy contacted by LPGA

John Canzano, The Oregonian

My Sunday columncausing a stir in golf circles and I'm receiving an unusually high amount of email. LPGA is "pissed," I'm told, because I didn't write a happier/easier column to help them promote their tournament.

Dina Ammaccapane, the golfer, wants to get in touch with me and the caddy, I'm told. I've offered her my phone number. Happy to talk, in part, because she's been silent so far except for two lousy rounds of golf. On Thursday when I attempted to reach her I was told she wasn't willing to discuss the issue. Focused on the golf. And I understand that, but I'd still love to hear an explanation.

In the meantime, an update...

Cameron Kiyokawa said he was contacted by the LPGA, who told him they were sorry for his experience. He said he was offered "in rope" passes for today's round.

He turned them down.

"I appreciated the call, but I didn't feel like going," he said.

He's hanging out with his friends, headed to a concert in a park.

I'm not sure I blame the LPGA here, by the way. Good that they care, but this is on Ammaccapane. It's the women's tour, and I don't think I'd blame the PGA, NFL, NBA, etc. for one of the athletes simply being cruel and insensitive to another person because of his height. Maybe it's just me, but I only raised the point of the LPGA's struggle for exposure and survival because actions like the one Ammaccapane took in hiring a new caddy don't help the LPGA.

I'll get you an update when I have one.

By the way, a lot of email I'm receiving is coming from shorter persons. They're writing to me about their personal experiences and offering examples of citizens, soldiers, heroes and athletes who have made a difference despite being short.

My favorite is the story of Audie Murphy, the most decorated American soldier of World War II. He was 5-foot-5 and became a celebrated movie star post-war, appearing in 44 films. He also found some success as a country music composer.

Is he even tall enough to hold the bag off the ground? I mean, it weighs almost as much as he does.
