American Oyaji makes a great point. I've found less 'popular' chicks to be more genuine and less full of themselves than the 'hot' chicks...plus the following:
I'm personally attracted to people I like either physically or in terms of personality, shared hobbies, views and all that good stuff...I've dated girls who may not be beauty queens, but I was attracted to and that's that. It boils down to taste. In the same way, I couln't get it on with someone I disliked. Even in my adventures in the land of eternal smiles, I went for nice or OK looking girls quietly and camly sipping a drink at the back of the bar, not the in-your-face, I'm-the-hottest-around type everybody else went for....

I once purposely targeted a self-confessed 'unpopular' girl and ended up dating her for 2 years. Not only was she a great date, but an awesome shag...it just annoyed me that she kept saying I should have gone for her hot friend instead...low self-confidence...

A friend of mine used to say all cunts look and feel the same...but I must say the body attached to it makes a hell of a difference, too...

When I was in Jr. High School, we didnt have dating, we had "going with each other" because everyone knew that dating is over rated... takes out all the fun.

I hung out with some girls in Shibuya that were rockin hot, but there personality was complete shyte to the point where being with them was embarrassing. So I left, found me a so-so chick that was cool, then yadadada.

A lot of the so-so girls can be tampered with to look amazing, its just that some of them never had the confidence or the resources to change their style, etc. to hit that level. That ends up being more for your cookie jar because its clean, fresh, and looks damn good in the end result.

Many Japanese girls also naturally look nothing like they do with all their makeup and artificial hair styling (thinning, straightening, curling, color). I think it's probably more widespread in Japan than any other country. If you want to see what many look like before all the alterations, you can look at photos from the 1970's and 80's. I don't think it's worth it to care about how model-like she looks. I think most of those types don't speak English and those who do know they're in demand and aim for money or status, not some random English teacher. You may get lucky and meet an exception, but I think striving for that type specifically is going to lead to a lot of disappointment.

I think you are exaggerating just a tad. Girls do not go from gorgeous to obnoxious just on make-up. I know its popular to talk like that but be real, if you had to gnaw your arm off (I don't know what "gnaw" means but I assume it has something to do with sawing it off) that girl was perhaps passable at best with makeup.

I dated a gyaru-ish type girl for a bit and she lost interest in that style and decided to dye her hair black and simplify her appearance to be more serious looking. It was night and day, and not in a good way. There are some really hot/cute women here and they would still look nice just being natural, but you have to remind yourself to try to see past those alterations. You still may not know who you're with/dating until you see them out of the shower. I think the problem is often the opposite in the US and maybe UK where many women don't put their make up on in an attractive way, and they kind of end up looking worse like those scary faux lesbians.

Ikemen- You're still young so it's forgivable BUT, you'll eventually learn that it's better to get laid than sleep alone. Not saying you should aim for girls less than your standards but sometimes you just have to work with what's available. Go for gold if you want a gf or wifey but for bangin', variety is the spice of life, enjoy it while you still can!
