WiFi Router - English

Postby nullpointer » Tue Aug 31, 2010 4:17 pm

Can anyone recommend a good WiFi Router with an english interface? I normally install tomato or DD-WRT if someone wants an english interface on their J-router but in this case, my friend is coming to Osaka directly from US and cannot do it on her own. Thanks.

Apple Airport Extreme or Express

Postby YokohamaDancer » Tue Aug 31, 2010 5:55 pm

I bought some cheap WiFi router at PC Depot near Yokosuka a few years back and struggled with having only the Japanese menus. It then started dropping connections with my MacBook Pro, and finally I just decided to get an Airport Extreme AND an Express. Most brilliant decision I ever made. Finally, no headache! The only space for my laser printer does not have wired networking, so I just plugged the Ethernet cable from the printer to the Express, went into Apple's Airport Utility, made the Express part of the Extreme's network, and away I went. And here's why I say Apple: everything Apple that I know of can be changed to pretty much any language known to man. For heavens's sake, I just looked at my iPod Touch bought at Yodobashi and I could change it to Arabic or Bahasa Melayu (what is that...?) Anyway, sorry for the Apple fanboy rant:rolleyes: but, it's such a pain when companies decide to not make all languages available on their device (my Panasonic GF1 for instance...damn Panasonic:wall: )

If your friend does not have to connect any extra wired devices to connect to it, then the Airport Express probably would suffice.

Best of luck!

Get her to bring a router with her, ideally one that has a PS that will support 100V, though running a 110V router at 100V shouldn't cause any issues. Router's are tiny these days so it shouldn't be a big issue for her to pop one into her luggage.

Japanese routers are freakin' garbage. All of them. I've seriously gone through 4 of them in a period of months (various brands, purchased at various locations) before finally getting serious and ordering a D-Link from a U.S.-based retailer.

It's the best decision you'll ever make when it comes to routers. Really. Trust me. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt, don't want another one. :(
