Model Kayo Sato revealed on TV last night that she was born a boy. Sato has featured in a number of magazine fashion shoots and appeared as a regular on some shows. There have already been examples of transsexual models, singers and actresses, most recently Ayana Tsubaki, but their background is usually known to all. In Sato's case, it seems her announcement was the first public acknowledgement and many of her fans are apparently still reeling. She's the one on the left in this video game TV show. A Japanese article today indicated that the story of Sato's "coming out" as a guy is making waves in China.
Apparently he/she is not a well-known celebrity in China, but the media is making a big deal of the whole thing for its shock value.

In another installment of my campaign to completely misinform fellow board members, it looks like I misidentified Sato. It seems she's the one on the right in that video. At least, that's what the Chinese sites are saying (and I've also just noticed BiginJapan mentioned the reporting over there before me). The Japanese site I first looked at had her down as the one on the left and I can't say her blog photos clinched it one way or the the other. The girl on the left certainly does have a name sign saying Kayo Police in front of her but it looked like it might have meant "Kayo's team" at first.

I think when you've already been told a girl used to be a guy then it's easy to start picking out male traits. Suddenly, everyone hears Sato's voice differently whereas before it was one of the reasons no-one suspected her. If I told people that Koyuki used to be a man and showed them this picture then I suspect they could do the same:



Ultimately, something like SJ's spidey sense is only testable if it can call someone out as a former guy before being told. I doubt anyone here really knew Sato so it's moot in her case.
