Japan's Measures Against Keirin Race-Fixing

SMH: Lockdown - How Japan stops rorts*
Imagine a world in which professional sports stars are cut off from all outside communication. A world where they can not have mobile phones nor laptops. Where they are prohibited from acknowledging the crowd with glances or gestures. Where as soon as they leave the locker room to compete, they can not even move to adjust their clothing. Where every competitor is followed by CCTV - and in some cases by insiders who are paid to keep a close eye on them - from the field to the confines of the change room. Think of a world where, after each day of competition, competitors are driven under the watchful eye of security to their hotel where a complete lockdown is enforced. All this to avoid the fixing of results and to prevent gambling rorts...more...

*Definition of rort

I see the keirin guys when I'm out riding sometimes. It's really fucking depressing when you're pedaling up a big hill, almost able to cut washers off your ring you're straining so hard and then some tree-trunk thighed motherfucker cruises past you like you're standing still. On a fixed gear.

I know a guy that used to work for JRA (I think you know the same guy Mulybe.) He tells me they do the same thing to the jockeys as well. When they make the final declaration to run for the weekend on Fridays, the jockeys must be in the "jockey's room" by 1600 that day. They are not allowed outside of the room until their last ride on Sunday. They are not allowed to have a keitai with them and cannot receive regular phone calls (excluding a valid emergency) while they're in the room. Literally no contact with the outside world.

He tells of a funny story about a journalist from the UK who was going to write a big expo type story on how these "poor" jockeys were so horribly treated. My friend interpreted for the writer who asked a journeyman jockey about his thoughts on the so-called "jockey lock up." The jockey told the writer that he was married to a wife that was forever picking at him, lived with a fire breathing mother-in-law, had three kids that never listened to him and even his dog would bite him when he came home. He told the writer that Saturdays and Sundays in "lock-up" were his best days of the week and he wouldn't change the system even if he could. The article was never written.

If I was a jockey, I'd probably be a afraid of women and dogs too.

Common illegal performance enhancer in cycling. (EPO)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death
