Label maker

Postby Coligny » Mon Sep 20, 2010 1:16 pm

Need recomandations for a label maker / printer.
Reaching a point were i can't yank a wire anywhere without triggering some kind of catstrophical mayhem. (last one was mistakenly unplugging my fridge before vacation... Lost all my caramel icecreams and my precious nagasaki buns that i was preciously keeping like treasures in case of zombies apocalypse...)

Trouble is... Here all them label printer seems to be overflowing either with useless kanjis or worse cutesy kewt hello kitty logo printing ability.

Do you guyz have experience with a simple one to use ? It's typically the tool were i refuse to have to read a manual everytime i need it. These junk should be as straitghforward as a fax or a copier.

Any advice welcome. Don't really care aboot device cost, if ink and sticker roll supplies could be not too expensive it would be nice

I assume you already have a decent inkjet printer. Why not just buy labels that you can print with it?

I have better than that, an Alps MD5500 microdry printer. But it's always an adventure to use it and therefore only keep her to do waterbased slide decals for my model or UV proof stickers for the car.

For simple stickers, the word PITA come to my mind... you have to manage sheets, not all software allow to resuse partially used sheets (yeah I can do a FMPro database for this in 20 minutes... but still). Label printer prints on thin and wiiiide paper which, always perfectly centered on the line (height wise). Which is.. sort of a challenge on it's own with a regular printer. Also, when you are under the hood with greasy paws and need to label all your stuff as you go... a mini label printer is much more convenient than going back to the 2nd floor bedroom and try to remember what you was trying to identify... In case I wasn't clear, i was speaking of these kind of label printers:

Ah-ha ... I'm beginning to see through your little ploy, Coligny, Your facade of "need" when the real issue is "want."

You just want another cool widget!

Being a dyed-in-the-wool geek myself I understand these things quite well.
Rationalize away, brother!

They don't sell Dymos in Japan?

It's that infernal device that only print semi rigid (read: bombproof) label on thick plastic sheet by distorting said plastic ? Good luck labelling thin wiring in tight places with that...

The problem is not "not available" the probleme is more,: there are 40 brasiliun kind all of them with features criminally useless and with all sort of trauma inducing kanji labelled keys... What I need (SAY NEED) is an a-z 1-0 +-,./?! able thingamabob that don't require to be graduated from the naval academy before being able to use it...

And it's really a NEED because I'm working (big word for what I do) on way too many things at the same time with sometimes few month of delay because something gets a bigger priority in the queue. And when I come back nothing make sense anymore I can't usually read back my own handwriting or ran out of place on the sticker. I went back last week end to an old RC project semi-truck... There is an electronic board inside... hand made by me... 75% of wiring and components unused... and I will have to reverse engineer it, because I have absolutely no clues what it was supposed to do. But damn... look like I wuz much more smarterer last year...

Uh.... actually no. I actually find it quite useful to label wiring, the thinner the easier as you can just fold the label around the wire and stick it back onto itself. Just get the simplest possible unit with some black-on-white cartridges and you should be good. If you really can't use one without roman lettering just order it from the US or Yurop.

fake edit: I just went to dymo-japan.jp and I see what you mean. What I actually mean is something like this, not that squeeze-distort nonsense.... I thought those were all thrown on a big heap and burned somewhere around 1989-90?

Oh dear, just checked their japanese market lineup... They only have the prehistoric models, i'm surprised that they're not steam powered...
