I'm on my laptop right now high up in the hills of Hachinohe. They have shut down most of the roads heading to the ocean and there is a real sense of panic in people. Hopefully it turns out to be less than expected. It seems that high tide will hit at 2:00 so the two combined will cause the damage.

Yeah there seems to be some confusion between the unusual high tide (schedule for 2pm) coupled with tsunami.

Good luck.

JMA reports 10 cm at Minami-Torishima.

NHK just confirmed what I'd been thinking - this is the first Major Warning issed since 1993.

First wave at Nemuro (Hokkaido): 30 cm.

The second and third waves can be much bigger.

Well I am back home, I think the treat is over but as Yokohammer said the second and third waves can be bigger. Luckily we only had a 25 cm wave here, so it seems like everything is ok. At least I hope so.

Second wave of 1.2 meters in Iwate.
90 cm at Sendai airport.
The sea level has dropped quite a bit, so there's more to come. Probably nothing devastating though.

Holy hell! I just came back from jogging as I thought the risk of anything happening had passed. As I mentioned before, I live very near a river, which empties into the Pacific. Anyway as I was running I was surprised at how low the water level was. I thought for sure that it would be higher considering we had another wave hit at 4:25 and it was 70cm high. Anyway as I was on the back stretch I could hear this kind of whosh sound, and looked at the river and saw this big wave pushing the water back up the river, and within seconds it was way up. I would say a good meter, from where is had been only seconds before. Not high enough to do any damage, but it was really interesting to see just how quickly things can change. I wonder if that is the end of the waves for now?

Wow Canman, that's really nuts! Glad it wasn't any worse. (I know a guy who was in Thailand when the 2004 Tsunami hit...)
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking

Damn canman! Yeah as they kinda mentioned the later waves were likely to be bigger than the first ones. They weren't so accurate on timing but these things are so hard to predict.

Kind of wondering why this is not under this thread, much more accurate.

Because the idiot that started it all (*) couldn't find the good thread on time because he wuz a little kinda too busy trying not to shit himself too much while using the semi random "search" feature...

Now in other new... these ridiculous excuses:
Via the googles

Considering how close the call was. It's like saying, 'sorry, not dead yet, hope it'll be bigger next time'

EDIT:

Like real totally close indeed....

Only in Japan. I was just watching the news and they were reporting extensively on yesterday's tsunami, and the evacuations etc. Then they interviewed the local meteorologist and the poor bastard had to apologize that the tsunami wasn't bigger and that he was sorry many people had to leave their homes. But if anything had happened and they didn't warn people they would be screaming for his head. Isn't safe but sorry a motto used here in Japan. I feel for the guy.

Yeah, this has been going on since this morning. Totally surreal. Adding to the weirdness is the fact that they ordered around 330,000 evacuations, but the actual number of evacuees counted in the evacuation centers was a mere 15,000, about 4.6%.

So people ignored the evacuation order anyway.

Yes, lots of rock 'n roll in and around Fukushima, which is the next ken down from where I'm at. I'm hoping it's all a sign that pressure is being relieved, rather than a buildup to something nasty.

I'm sort of ok with the idea of having every natural event trying to kill you...

Quake, rain, wind, volcano...

Much much much less stressfull than having the germans on your north border...
