Transit riders in New York and New Jersey can now pay their fare by simply holding their Visa payWave-enabled mobile phone near the designated reader at the fare gate.

Apparently you need a special PayWave sensor on your iPhone (no details available), and you have to start an app before you can pass through the turnstile.
The Japanese FeliCa system in operation since 2006 seems much more efficient, and there's less chance of your expensive phone getting snatched while you fumble around starting up an app.
