Costco Opening A Store in Kyoto
Kansai News, October 6, 2010
Good news is coming to Kyoto in the form of low prices. Costco will be opening a new store in the Yawatashi area of Kyoto. They will begin construction on the new store soon and plan to open it around August of 2011.

(Full Story)

Kyoto!? I can't really imagine why they would choose Kyoto over so many other potential locations they could open a new store. Whatever, at least they seem to have resumed opening locations here, hopefully there will be more to come soon.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

You would think that Kyoto would be enforcing restrictions on building and constructions that do not fit the theme of the city.

Sadly, Kyoto is gradually losing its old-world charm, and it seems that the city officials don't really give a rat's ass, although the inhabitants generally do. There was quite an uproar when they built that new station building, and the Kyoto Hotel Okura. Of course there was an uproar when they built the Kyoto Tower Hotel back in 1964, but that didn't make any difference either. The fascinating little shops that used to line Shijo-dori and Kawaramachi-dori, for example, are being overtaken by game centers and karaoke joints. Some of the once-quaint back alleys are starting to look and smell like parts of Shinjuku.

Yawata city is pretty far from central Kyoto though. About half way to Nara, by the looks of it.

Kyoto supposedly introduced a 7 story or so building height limit a few years ago.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

If anything can be taken as a sign of decline in Japan, then it's the ongoing proliferation of pachinko parlours.

Well, someone's got to keep the remittances to North Korea going.
