old timers (those of you who've been in japan 10+ years), do you think you are possibly immune to the xenophobia now? i think location has a lot to do with it, tokyo (imo) seems to be more open to foreigners. in osaka there was lots of the 'all gaijin are stupid english teachers and are causing trouble' mentality. or maybe i just hung out in the wrong places. ;)

I don't think I am immune as such, but I suppose if I was I wouldn't know, right?

That said, I really don't give a flying fuck what people besides family and friends think of me so perhaps there was a degree of natural immunity in place long before I came to Japan.

I own a house in Osaka and a place in rural Okayama. I get treated well in both places -- the woman at the fish market near the cottage always gives us extra stuff when we go shopping, for example.

Most Japanese do assume that I teach but I don't think that is an unreasonable assumption as most "western" (ie non-Asian non-South American) foreigners outside Tokyo teach. I just tell them I don't and that's the end of that.

I think Japan is a good place to be an expat but it certainly helps to speak the language to a reasonable degree of conversational fluency. I am guessing that if I didn't then my life here would be very different.

Language really is key for basic day-to-day living. If you have that pretty much covered, when you meet someone for the first time you can generally feel the initial trepidation melting away as they gradually "forget" that you're an outsider. It's the official situations where you're classified by the book (government/financial dealings, for example) that are perpetually aggravating.

I never had a problem in 5 years in Japan. Although it did take about a year to convince the mother-in-law to agree to let me marry her daughter. But she's pretty cool with it now. No choice he he he.

I've only been through Incheon airport a few time, but only good treatment through there. I grouped with a Korean at a Uni in Oz for an assignment once, that fucker couldnt speak english for shit, but they passed him anyway. Can't fail full fee paying students now can we.

The only place I felt racism was in Thailand. The blokes over there are a bunch of cunts. And, I was there for the beach, not the girls, who I find very fugly.

Yeah, Incheon Airport's fine, pity a lot of the Koreans who don't work there dont take notes when they pass thru on how to act like normal people instead of immature arseholes.

Re Korea is best, I bet that's a pisstake. Korean sentry isn't. You can almost see the posters there crying into their keyboards when they post because the world just won't listen to their racist mantras and grabbag of bullshit 'facts' about one of theleast achieving countries in the world until it borrowed western culture and technology and had industrialisation forced on it by the Japanese.

As for the xenophobia issue of this thread - I reckon one of the defs. of a country that's xenophobic is that they can't handle as a normal part of life people who look different or are seen to have 'separate blood'.

Japan does fall into that category tho I think the xenophobia's much less than people think apart from uyoku losers. Example - the Peruvian Japanese. Not trying to heap more shit on them than they got but they were ethnically Japanese and that was supposed to mean they were more suitable for life in Japan:shakeh: and somehow their J blood would make them adjust to a completely different society :shakeh: We all know what happened there.

They were and are preferred to people like educated Africans who have gone the world over and adjusted to many different cultures and learnt different languages. Japanese still think that people who look like them can adapt to J society better which is 1 of the reasons the policy makers in general still don't want gaijin like whites or whatever other race/ethnicity settling long term even if they learn the language, can adapt well etc.

My mate in Korea told me that the Koreans have the same attitude except more of it. They loathe and resent whitey even tho whitey plus African Americans ensured they're not living under a Nth Korean type nightmare. The Koreans don't mind so much if poor Asians go there to do the shit work and stay longer/long term because they look similar to Koreans and most important, they give Koreans reason to feel superior to them just by being there and at the bottom of the work and social pile.

In Oz re immigration etc this is how I and a lot of Aussies I know think if you're gonna choose who comes into our country:

An Iranian Muslim who opposed the Mullah arseholes in Iran and had to flee because of that is preferable to a white from somewhere who is apathetic re democracy because they've always know it.

An African who speaks English and is from a country where there's been some experience of liberal democracy is preferable to an Afghani who enters by boat, doesn't speak English and who knows nothing but tribalism.

An English speaking Indian who's prepared to drive buses and do other jobs that they didn't train for but are not too proud to do to make a living is preferable to a Shiite Lebanese who came to Oz more than 30 years ago because Malcolm Fuckwit Fraser decided they would but has never learnt English (tho free Eng classes were available) and brought up their kids to be more or less hostile to Oz society.

So basically, South Koreans don't want anyone living next door.

Too bad Japan wasn't included. Kind of funny that Hong Kong was dead last on accepting different races or immigrant workers, but was first by a long shot on being ok with heavy drinkers.

Basically, people in HK would rather live next door to an alcoholic drug addict than a foreigner by a wide, wide margin, lol.

Didn't want to post again in this thread but have to congratulate Taro for posting the vid!

From what I saw in Korea, its just as well the moron did that because otherwise an aggressive fucker like that would have killed a pedestrian on the street when he felt like moving and they were 'in his way'.

If you've seen what goes on in Korea re streets and sidewalks and pedestrian crossings (if you're trying to walk across on a green light so many K cunts won't let you and will drive straight at you) then you won't have any sympathy for the cunt. The lesson the K media took from the elevator bullshit is that they have to make elevator doors stronger - not that this kind of hostile behaviour is fucked and should be discouraged.

Classic...he actually plunged to his death. Those wasted seconds waiting for the next elevator were just too much.

You'd think so for sure. I wonder what the guy in the elevator thought when the scooter smashed into it (or through the roof)...

stranger things have happened. bejing hosted the olympics and south africa got the world cup.

actually, i think these selection committees pick countries like that to try to promote some kind of 'look, the whole world can be non-racist for a whole month'. but there never is any followup to it and usually the country will complain about how many people defected/stayed behind/impregnanted locals, etc.

I found this video today and thought it would go well with this thread. I am certainly not implying New Zealanders tend to be racist (to the contrary, all the Kiwis I have met are delightful).

But this NZ news broadcast had me 100% convinced it was a parody until I researched and found it was real.

I think it is hilarious. Not because of what the guy is saying, but because of the fact that somehow a person like this is able to get a job on live television. This is about the level of conversation I remember from junior high school, with the nastiness of a full grown racist adult piled on top.

You'd be surprised. NZs overseas are different to ones at home. There's plenty of racism and reverse racism to go round it's just that they're not in your face about it unless it's Maoris going off about the pakehas (whites).

Speaking like someone whos never been to Korea. I've gone to see a mate who lives there and when you see 'usual' fucking behaviour, you know that videos a milder example of Korean behaviour.

Oh yeah and the video orig comes from a respectable newspaper in Daejon, big city outside Seoul. It aint a fake newspaper and the video aint fake, just like the fucking disgraceful one showing the older bitch on the Seoul subway pulling a young woman aroudn by her hair while the manly K men just watched. Go to davidswillswordpress.com to see that.

A weird racism

Postby raider » Wed Oct 20, 2010 10:27 pm

Id have to say Japan is pretty racist, but its a unique racism. Ive been to China/Korea and those fucked up places. Defitenaly racism going on there but Japan is just too fucking weird for me. The stares on the train like Im unclean or something by some ugly fucker that looks like he/she could star as an alien without a costume in a movie. Go to hello work and 90% of the jobs the "counsler" helps you find are either shit or your unqualified because your a gaijin. They approach the call with the upmost sensitivity "gaikokujin daijobu desu ka? Answer: Muri! That shit can fuck with your head, but I guess it aint racism. So many Japanese work on the bases and embassies and if they arent pampered by the embassy staff or base goofs (pussy hounds) in charge they cry discrimination and get whatever/whenever they please. All claim to speak English on their resumes but once they get in the system, poof goes their English and straight into the group. Eigo wakaranai is their answer for everything. Im sick of having to talk to people like in the 3rd person or feel inferior like I have to lower myself. When I visit Guam I never get this feeling. They just treat me like a human. Ill be glad when I can finally say to these people with authority, shove it all up your ass, I aint never coming back!

8O But, of course...everything in Japan is unique, right down to the four seasons.

Seriously, though, I agree with much of what you had to say. One set of rules for "us," and another set for "them."
