Question about FG Jake Adelstein's "Tokyo Vice"

Postby Catoneinutica » Sun Oct 10, 2010 11:44 pm

Finally got around to buying it, and it's well worth it. I got the UK paperback, and I'm wondering if something was excised from the original hardcover. Adelstein refers to being threatened by Goto and his associates in Oct 2005 over the liver transplant story, but, I'll be damned if I can find anywhere in the book where he actually describes the actual threat. Can someone point me to a particular chapter or page?

It certainly is an outrage that Goto is still out and about. Still calling the shots at Burning Productions from his temple in Kanegawa?

Don't have the book to hand but isn't there a sequence where he is asked to turn up for a meeting with a couple of Goto's goons? He goes to a hotel coffee shop accompanied by one of his police buddies. They effectively warn him off writing the story but use oblique language so the threat is implied rather than stated.

More recently, Adelstein has taken issue with an implied threat in Goto's book. Goto apparently "joked" he'd be better off if Adelstein wasn't around. Again, that's not a threat but Adelstein wants the publisher to take it out.

You know, that coffee shop meeting you reference - I'm quite sure it's not in the paperback. Hmm...

Interesting about Goto's implied threat. Taken at face value, it's an innocuous statement of fact, but certainly no one if not Adelstein can read between the lines of a yak's utterances.

One hopes the liver-transplant door in the US and Australia has been closed to the bastards; I suspect the Goto transplant caused a few people to remove their names from donor lists.

Judging by the images on amazon UK's website on their look inside the book link, it seem like it is in the very first paragraph of the prelude on page 1

The Enrichment Center reminds you that the weighted companion cube will never threaten to stab you and, in fact, cannot speak.

D'oh, that's what I get for not starting a book at the beginning. Yeah, it's right there. I figured the stuff about his time at the temple and his hiring by the Yomuiri would be boring, so I skipped ahead to the part where he'd been assigned to the beat in Saitama.

-Clare Campbell in Tokyo Hostess (I bought it because it had been blurbed by The Sun) refers to him as "Edelstein."
-Jake said he interviewed Lucie Blackman's Australian boyfriend as the boyfriend was out touting for a club on a Roppongi street. Sounds like a classy guy. Couldn't she have done a little better?
