Japanese have fewest digital friends on social networks

Postby BigInJapan » Tue Oct 12, 2010 9:34 am

"Malaysians have the most friends on their social networks, while Japanese users have the fewest."

The study, conducted by research firm TNS, interviewed 50,000 consumers in 46 countries for the study.

In Malaysia the average number of friends is 233, closely followed by 231 in Brazil and 217 in Norway.

This contrasts to an average of just 29 friends in Japan, and 68 in China.

The results could suggest "a culture that embraces fewer but closer friendships," thinks TNS's chief development officer Matthew Froggatt.

I joined a conference a little while back at the office of a client that was trying to use social media as a tool. The office is 99.9% Japanese, but half the people there were foreign (and nobody had more than a few years' experience, i.e. nobody who had authority to effect change had any interest). The manager who organized it had heard of social media from the company's overseas offices and thought it sounded interesting, but had no idea what it actually was.

Anyway, one interesting thing that came up was when I asked how many people use social media like Facebook or Twitter with their real names. All the foreign hands went up. I asked who only uses fake names, and all the Japanese hands went up. This reluctance may affect how many people here want to join networks where real identities are expected.

What it suggest is the truth: Japanese people are beyond paranoid when it comes to personal information. Especially on the Internet. So on sites like Mixi almost no one uses their real name so their friends can never find them.

I wonder, is that because of fear of standing out and attracting attention in general, or have the ni-tards done such an effective job of obsessively stalking and harassing people that they've driven the rest of the country off the net?

I might say it's just the ni-chan douches, but the Japanese play their cards close to their chest in all kinds of situations.

Know what I hate about mixi, besides the thing you mentioned? The fact that EVERY FUCKING WOMAN uses a picture of their yappy piece of shit dog as their profile photo and half the guys use their stupid looking cars, or some photo of their eyeball or some shit.

Of course, this could all be different now. I forgot my mixi password and haven't been able to log on for years :frown2:

Or simply that Japanese don't add every single person they somehow had any sort of contact with.

"Nice to meet you, are you on fb?" people are idiots.
Not to mention all those virtual life nerds who send out friend requests to random people just to get a high friend count on any sns.

+1 some blokes in my contact list have 400 friends... like if they add every schmuck they saw on the subway... I don't know how they manage the gajillion daily Farmville updates...

I have... 15... and overdue for a cleanup... In a way, it depends on how you use it for... If it's to keep contact with people you know or just because your missing your popularity contests days in highschool...

I'm off topic, but it's the same for call-ins to radio shows, too. What's the big deal about using your real name to request a song?
