8 Megapixel "prosumer" camera

Postby Caustic Saint » Tue Aug 19, 2003 6:10 am

From Sony:
Key Features and Controls

Resolution: Sony's 8.0-megapixel CCD image sensor provides the Cyber-shot DSC F828 camera with a maximum image size of 3360 x 2460, equating into 11 x 17-inch prints at 200 dpi or 8.5 x 11-inch prints at 300 dpi.

Optics: The new camera features a Carl Zeiss® Vario-Sonnar® T* 7X zoom lens (28 - 200mm, 35mm equivalent) with manual zoom for greater framing control, to fully extract the performance of the 8.0-megapixel CCD sensor.

NightShot Infrared System: Enables the camera to capture infrared images in total darkness at a distance of up to 15 feet.

Super resolution, nice optical zoon and it can take pictures in the dark! All yours for about $1200!

If I won the lottery, that would be high on the list of things I would buy. Not unless I win the lottery though, I think.

8MPIXELs is a lot! I wonder if it doesn't suffer from artifacing or other problems.
The Zeiss Lens is exciting- I have one on my Yaschica T4 and am very happy with its sharpness.
If you see any reviews, please post!

$1200 is really quite good for a digi SLR .. esp an 8 megapixel one! I'd buy it ..well, if I wasn't massively in debt on a college student budget I would.

With all those megapixels, you'd probably need a fairly decent sized memory card(s) to deal with the picture sizes, considering the picutre files will most likely be 4x as big as your typical 2megapixel digital cameras.

I work with medium format cameras and have been thinking about getting a 10.2 megaP camera back. (it attaches where the film should go) and they cost around $11000 (this is not a typo) a 8 mega p and a fairly ok slr is great for that price..

But with all digital cameras the colour is always shit belive me even the best. the only way to get near perfect quality is get your negatives scanned even major mags still scan all the glossy pics.

Go back to film its still the best you can edit it lated if need be.

BTW a 8 MegaP camera will eat IMB microdrives for brekfast and you will have nothing for lunch

A Tiff/raw uncompressed image is 8 mb so a 256 sd card will only take 32 pictures you will need to carry around your laptop to back it up.
Am I still not allowed to have a sig?

Take a closer look at the article. It's not an SLR. It's got a great lens, but it's not removable. You can see this in their cool exploded view pic of the camera:

Wouldn't it be great if you could get a digital SLR for that price? :) I'd start saving today if I could.

Yep, I know that they can cost a lot. One of my friend's has a $3k digicam which they referred to as "cheap". 32 pictures on a 256mb storage isn't horrible.. dunno what kind this camera uses but if you could get a couple gig chips you'd have 256 pictures (and for anything longer just take a laptop.)

Lens maybe not removable, but I also don't see any seperate viewfinder. Since when did an SLR have to have a removable lens? :p Now, maybe it does have a seperate viewfinder and I just don't see it, maybe..
