Yeah, something like that...Thanks, AO!

-A Japan That Can Say "NO" was, twenty years ago, based on the same premise: that public debt ownership by a foreign country gave that country some sort of whip hand. I wonder what Blinky has to say about how that assertion played out...

This is pretty silly stuff (a socialist country lecturing on taxes and health care?) but I guess it's crude enough to pass for political discourse in the US. If the US is really on the verge of collapse then whoever owns their debt... is totally screwed. Ask Bear Sterns.

If it's any consolation for the Americans, by 2040 we'll ALL be working for the Chinese no matter where we come from...

It's been a long, long, long time since China was socialist (authoritarian, yes, socialist, no)...and it's probably less socialist than the Bureaucratic States of America.
You're right about them being in trouble for owning the debt, though.

As someone who has actually been to 2030, I can assure you that this video is completely bogus. Nobody physically sits in an auditorium and listens to a lecture given in person any more. What a waste of everyone's time that turned out to be.

I thought the commercial evoked Bubble-era fearmongering of Japan in the West - and we know how Japan turned out.

-catone
-has smellovision replaced television as of 2030? (Fuck the hoverboards; I'm already irrevocably sedentary as of c. 2010.)

When can we start buying self-tying shoes?

Actually, self-tying shoelaces are right around the corner, but they eventually get recalled after a few American children lose their fingers to 'em. As for hoverboards, can't say I remember seeing any, but hover-Rascals are EVERYWHERE.

Yeah, just like back in the 80s when everyone predicted Japan would soon own the world.

I suspect that the work done for the Chinese in 2040 will involve alot of changing of colostomy bags.

That is the biggest challenge facing China: to get rich before it gets old.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

China has already lost that battle. The question is if they will ever get rich at all... The way things are looking though they've lost that one too.

Well, I hope you guys are right and I'll gladly stand corrected if it proves to be the case, but China scares the living bejeezus out of me....

The Chinese have long memories...I was reading an article on the Korean War the other day and Chou En Lai was saying that Chinese intervention in that conflict came about partly in response to colonialism that had raped his country over the previous century. Hard to argue against that -- except China's opponent in Korea was the U.S. (OK, I know it was the UN, but let's be realistic here, folks...), which for all its faults, can in 1950 can hardly be said to have been a major proponent of imperialism (it was, however, well and truly on the road there...) and had easily been China's biggest supporter in its anti-imperialist battle with the Japanese up until just five years earlier.
With over 60 years of anti-colonialist, anti-Japanese rhetoric in its education and hundreds of millions to mobilize when necessary, I'm sure the Chinese are itching to bloody a few noses....Here's hoping the only blood is in the stools of the diapers of the old Chinese in the decades ahead.
