Computer Question!

Postby Shibuya Me » Tue Aug 19, 2003 3:01 pm

:D

If you take the hard drive out of a computer,
what happens to all of the programs that were
saved on them? Do you lose all the programs?

Does anyone know? :D

The reason I ask, I want to take my hard drive
out of my computer and take it with me when I
move back to my home country. I do not want
to take the entire computer back with me....

Anyone? Bueller? :P

You'll be fine... the only issue will be with drivers if the two computers are different models and makes. Depending on the OS, the system will either barf all over you or ask you to insert the appropriate setup disks.

Not to be sounding bitchy but you answered your own question. You know that you computer saves you files to a harddrive and you can transport them by taking it out. What do you think happenes to you files? They dont need power to stay alive(although all matter is based on energy I am talking about a PSU)

The only think you have to think about is that you operating system wont like booting in different hardware and you will likley have to reinstall it. If you have a partition on your Harddrive and Kept all you files seperate from you boot partition no problem. Format you boot partiton and you keep all you old files. All forms of windows if that is what you are using(Likley by the question you asked) Hate being reinstalled and you continously fuck up if you dont install on a formatted drive.

Its you choice but I recommend Partition magic and Make a partition For the files(Remember you web favorites(thoes porn links might come in handy one day)) you wanna keep and you will have no problems at all.

Yes, use "Partition Magic"--it a wise, wise choice for PCs <or> Buy an extra www.meetthegeeks.org/ourreview/2003/usbharddriveenclosure/+%22disk+enclosure%22+with+cheap+USB+&hl=en&ie=UTF-8]HD enclosure with cheap USB connection to put your old HDD into.

Your right I was thinking about editing my post to include programs. But if you install you programs on another partition(which i do when using windows(I have 360gb 12 partitions in total)) some will work some wont and you can always point the extension back to the program.

Reinstalling is always the last measure it should never be done(if you think windows has buggs try a double installation of windows).

Although I do belive windowx XP can export all user files and programs and be reinstalled later. I think in Control Panel> Admin or user or some thing like that. But its all up to how you trust microsoft to do a clean file export or trust how you manage your own files I prefer the latter(I can always blame my stupidity but who will listen to me blaming microsoft)

I asked a simple question, and
because you have to put down

tells me a bit about you.

I am, by the way...under 49.5

Oh geez, the things i heard working for AOHell...Also the A:drive can hold multiple disks at once, or can be used as a credit card slot; I can see what they are doing/see them (since I am telling them what is on their screen); If I am their ISP, I am responsible for their outrageous phone bills from porno dialers; If I am their OEM they were told by their ISP to call to have their virus removed; If I am their Anti-Virus Vendor they were told to call by the OEM to fix their ISP login problems...

Seriously though I have worked in similar jobs. With people demanding i give the right answers. If I answer any way technical. I am trying to confuse them. Despite trying my best to give them accurate information to fix the problem.

After a few months you dont even listen. Longer you start to get nasty. Just saying things like "Dear by the sounds of it I think you broke it. I recomend you phone an engineer to get it fixed. I dont think you will lose all you files but you might. The call out fee is only $100 I will make all the nessary arangments for you." A job well done and you can get your engineer university friend a few quid.

Cant connect to ISP = Broken
There is something flashing Red with numbers = Broken
There is a noise = Broken
Etc = Broken

Back to the topic.

It depends on how the drive was formatted in the first place, if the drive is being removed from one machine and installed in another, you could have quite a few problems especially if the OS won't boot due to the fact that the machines are totally different.

If you want to keep your files and not installed programs, I suggest you to partition the drive, C and D. In C install the OS, in D: keep your stored downloaded files.

In D, create a few folders, software, music, images and so on. Then store your files there. That way if ever you want to transplant a hard drive, D drive will remain intact, and C drive can be formatted on the new PC.

That is how I store my files. It separates the files from the OS, and if your OS ever failes, your files should still remain intact.

Presumably you are going to put the drive back in a working computer with an OS and programs. In that case, just set it up as the 2nd harddrive and use it for extra storage space, or transfer your important files to your main hard drive.
