Clinton: Senkakus subject to security pact
NEW YORK (Kyodo) The disputed Senkaku Islands in the East China Sea are covered by the Japan-U.S. security pact, meaning Washington could consider retaliation against a military strike on Japanese territory, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton told Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara on Thursday amid the rising tension between Tokyo and Beijing, Maehara said.

Like China is going to care about the WTO when it doesn't suit their needs... all they can basically do is write an angry letter telling them about how angry they are.

Then again, China can act like a bully all they want but I'm sure the rest of the world doens't mind paying an extra $20 for a harddrive made with ytterbium from some place else and let China choke on its smog and coal ash. It's not like the slump in demand for electronics of the past few years hasn't driven down prices far enough already.

Both Japan and China have taken disputes to the WTO in the past, although not against each other, yet:

China, Japan begin repairing ties at Asian summit

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Fri Oct 29, 2010 8:41 pm

HANOI (AFP) – China and Japan began repairing their major rift at an Asian summit, agreeing to improve ties and resume talks on a disputed gas field as their leaders appeared headed for direct talks.

Asia's two big powers have been embroiled in their worst diplomatic feud in years, sparked by a territorial dispute that has escalated into protests, scrapped meetings and allegations China is freezing exports of vital minerals.

All eyes at the East Asian Summit in Vietnam's capital are on the sparring match and whether the rival leaders, China's Wen Jiabao and Japan's Naoto Kan, will hold highly anticipated direct talks.

Japanese Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara said Friday after a meeting with his China counterpart which yielded agreement on key issues, that the two-way summit would now "probably take place in Hanoi".

Japanese broadcaster NHK cited government sources as saying the pair would meet some time after 1200 GMT. Chinese officials, while not ruling out the possibility, could not confirm the arrangements.

But in a sign of the thawing mood, Kan walked up to Wen and the pair shook hands before a luncheon between the 10-member Southeast Asian bloc and its three East Asian partners, a photographer saw.

Apologies in advance to anybody concerned about what nutty nationalists in two jingoistic East Asians are squabbling over (I thought it was over who would do the sentaku...sounds like the adult arguments I used to have with my ex-wife).
This case has me giggling frequently, with its oft-mentioned references to Rare Earth. For myself (and possibly others from non-Canadian commonwealth countries), the Japanese pronunciation of "rare earth" sounds more like "rare arse," which certainly sums up this cuntry as far as I have been able to tell after decades of living here.
I wonder if rare arse is used to make arse jet?

It also looks like they tried to do a hit and run right back to China.

Why doesn't stuff like this get leaked earlier? Let the people see for themselves who is at fault here. Then again I suspect the CPC firewall will have the vids blocked in about 2 nanoseconds. Sigh.

Names of real Coast Guard officers appear on leaked video fo

Postby BigInJapan » Sat Nov 06, 2010 11:15 am

Leaked video footage that appears to be of the September collisions between Japanese patrol boats and a Chinese trawler off a disputed island chain shows the names of Japan Coast Guard officers and subtitles explaining what is happening, Coast Guard and investigative sources said Saturday.

The officers that filmed might want to think about getting bodyguards and 24 hr surveillance on their homes for the immediate future...

I love how Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshito Sengoku and rest of the nazi DPJ officials are expressing their anger at the leaked Youtube poster (username Sengaku38) instead of going after China and the real ass hole culprits.

Maybe it's a matter of opinion but China is fuckin ass backwards when it comes to simple matters like common sense. Most Chinese view the little Chinese junk boat as the real hero in this incident for going up against the Goliath Japan Coast Guard.

Looks like they already got to user sengaku38 as the videos have been removed from his channel.

It's a bit too late to try and cover this up now. The videos have been all over the news on TV, and they're even still viewable in China, apparently. There has to be so many copies distributed all over the damn planet at this point that there's no chance they're going away.

It's more likely that the J-gov is just trying to show the C-gov that they're sincerely concerned about the leak ... which I doubt. I wouldn't be terribly surprised if it was deliberate.

Not that it'll make much difference. Most Chinese commentators responding to the videos don't give a damn that the Chinese ship was in the wrong. They all seem to believe that the Senkakus rightfully belong to China, and that the Japanese ships deserved to get rammed. Logic and proof don't mean squat.

It's just fucking weird. Like mass hysteria almost.

Scary people.

China is not a free country. I have no doubt that there are many Chinese nationalists who think China is always right and Japan is always wrong. However we don't see the other side at all as people with beliefs that go against the government's viewpoint can not speak out safely.

Understood and agreed. But this means that China, the way it is going or trying to go, is a huge contradiction that is likely to implode. That's scary. Strong international trade and economic growth (and olympics and expos, etc, etc.) are simply incompatible with the kind of oppression and human rights abuse that seem to be going on. I can't believe they've come as far as they have. And the way they (the C-gov) are getting so high-handed in their dealings with the rest of the world (it's not just Japan) indicates a plethora of pride and confidence that could lead to serious trouble.

I just hope things don't get too far out of control.

It was a leaky coast guard official!

A Japan Coast Guard official has confessed to leaking video footage of the September collisions between Japanese patrol boats and a Chinese trawler in waters near the disputed Senkaku Islands that was posted on the YouTube video-sharing website, investigative sources said Wednesday.

Details are still sparse, but you can read the rest of what's available here.

Ok, I give up!
I can understand why China wouldn't like the video to get out, but why is Japan being so vindictive about it? I would think that they would want the rest of the world to see what actually happened. Are they exposing any state secrets? I don't think so... If anybody can explain this, please do! OTOH, I could understand them wanting to censor this!

And if the Chinese viewpoint is "oh, but they attacked our fishing boats earlier", the Chinese should show those tapes as well.

I don't know if this is a full explanation, but the J-gov initially wanted to keep the video from public eyes in order to keep relations with China on an even keel. China was already pissed over the incident and making all kinds of trouble, and would see the J-gov releasing the video as an overt attempt to "rub mud in China's face," as the saying goes. So now that there's been a leak the J-gov is most probably making a big deal of it in an attempt to convince the C-gov that they're mortified and would never have done such a thing themselves. Damage control.

That's the reality on the surface, but I don't understand why Japan is acting so spinelessly toward China in this case. The average J-guy on the street doesn't seem to get it either. General opinion is that the video should have been released in the first place. However, China's restriction of rare-earth exports as a response to the incident could have debilitating consequences for Japan's already faltering economy, so maybe the J-gov wants to keep the pressure off as much as possible at least until alternative sources can be secured.

That's politics for ya. What a mess.

It wouldn't be in China's long term economic interest to restrict rare-earth trade with Japan. Why...? Because the consequences would be felt in China, too. China depend on Japanese goods because it knows that Japanese quality cannot be matched and that its consumers won't buy Chinese products. Both countries know this fact, so no, rare-earth is not the problem just a political posturing to shake things up a bit. Nothing major.

Good look see, Hammer. I think you got it right to a Tee. The J-government may have told China that they would not release the video that would be pretty embarrassing to China's original ranting position, but now that this nerd has done so, they have to make an example of him to show it wasn't a yaocho, or setup. It could get more interesting...

I haven't seen a better explanation anywhere, and at least now I know that I'm not alone in my confusion. Banzai to the guy who put it on line]

I also think they fact that it's being leaked now is the reason they're going to go after this guy. Besides the Chinese government, as Yokohammer pointed out, the average Japanese Joe isn't very happy with the way their government bent over the presented the dirt spider for a good old fashioned nailing by China. This video only makes it worse and can't be very good for the already unpopular DPJ and their soon-to-be short-lived political revolution.

This will never be a winning strategy with the Chinese, since from their point of view, they will be wondering why the J gov just doesn't summarily execute the guy 48 hours after it was figured out who it was, and since they won't this, they will view this as yet another example of Japanese intransigence.

The Japan Coast Guard officer who admitted uploading video footage of collisions between a Chinese trawler and Japanese patrol boats near the Senkaku Islands onto the Internet told police he was able to watch the footage through the coast guard's internal network, investigative sources said Thursday.

He also reportedly said he leaked the footage because the public had a right to see it.
