YMO Hate Their New CD Release

Postby Mulboyne » Tue Mar 29, 2005 7:10 pm

YMO L-R Trax
On this page (Japanese only), the members of YMO (Takahashi, Hosono and Sakamoto) are publicly disassociating themselves from Sony's new limited-edition boxed set of YMO live tracks and rarities. Sony has also re-released a shed load of their old solo work at the same time. The members say they had no legal right to stop the release under their contract.

That band really does need to archive their material for the casual fan. DJGizmo knows a lot about these guys. What do you think, dude?

YMO GO HOME :?: If you just buy one YMO CD which one should you get?

A similar case has just cropped up. Since Utada Hikaru has decided to take a break from the music business, EMI are putting out a second volume of singles from the latter half of her career. She's fine with that. However, at the same time, Universal is putting out an album called "Utada the Best". EMI has the rights to her Japanese releases but Universal has them for her attempts to break overseas markets. Consequently, there is no overlap between the two but they are going on sale at the same time. Utada is unhappy that Universal is marketing their product in this way and has called for her fans not to buy their release.

Interesting. To clarify a couple more points that come up in the ZakZak article, Utada says that she had no say in the production of the Universal compilation and calls it "soulless." It seems that what has really pissed her off is that Universal will be releasing their "unapproved" compilation on the same day as the EMI CD, which of course will dilute sales and therefore profits from the EMI release.

But hey, that's the music business. There's nothing illegal about what Universal is doing, so she has no recourse but to ask her fans not to buy the album ... which might not turn out to be the best strategy.

You know that one's musical career is over when they start to release the greatest hits album.

Going on an indefinite hiatus is often career suicide anyway. That's why the record companies are scrambling to release best-of compilations. It's a last grab for profit before the artist steps out of the spotlight.

From a purely business standpoint both EMI and Universal are doing the "right" (and obvious) thing.

I am starting to think Utada could be doing this as an insurance in case the CD sales bomb --and it will-- considering her latter US shit really sucked.

I love seeing these greedy cunts get all in a tiff because they only make millions instead of tens of millions....Not that I enjoy the record companies reaping in the cash, though.

I hope EMI, Universal and Utada get into a real bitch fight and cannibalize themselves...Easy, breezy, Japanesey....

For one thing, Utada is easy breezy about earning money. She and the family have tons of money up their asses for them to fuck off for the rest of their lives. That's one of the reasons why she hasn't produced any music or toured live lately. Speaking of her live concerts, my one advice: don't. It's fuckin horrible.

Cowardice is one of the more prominent features of my character, so I was never in danger of that...

But there's one mystery about Utada that I'd really love to solve...whatever happened to her mustache?

Akiko Wada said on TV that the situation is Utada's own fault for having two labels in the first place.

And then Utada fires back on her twitter but Akiko Wada's name was not mentioned in it. She advises that it is best to ignore such a thing and furthermore, drawing such a conclusion based on bits and fragments from the incident is (Wada's)personal "hobby" and not a true professional journalism.

I have to give Utada the props on this one.
