Jerry Black, CEO of global retail consultants Kurt Salmon Associates, looks set to become the first foreigner to be appointed to the board of supermarket giant Aeon. Black worked closely with Aeon when he ran the Asia-Pacific operations of Kurt Salmon and is said to have played a major part in helping the group outperform its rivals. Black will resign his current position and his appointment to the Aeon board will be confirmed at the upcoming shareholder's meeting. Aeon hopes to expand outside Japan and Black will help lead this effort.

Consequently, even though there are no formal titles for the executives under the President, Black will effectively be the No.2 ranking officer at the company. The article notes that there are some people in the organization who don't like the American's rapid rise. Some are jealous at the money they think he made as a consultant while others in the IT department wonder how effective his recommendations really were. The magazine suggests Black will have his work cut out to win people over.

Black's wife is apparently Japanese and he is thought to be something of a Japanophile.

Reuters: Aeon to double operating profit on Asia growth

Aeon Co Ltd, Japan's second-largest retailer, said it aims to nearly double its operating profit in three years by expanding in Asia, as it looks to nurture growth beyond its stagnant domestic market. The company in a business plan released on Tuesday predicted its operating profit would increase to 250 billion yen ($3.1 billion) in the year to February 2014, from 130 billion yen in its 2009/10 financial year.

Aeon, which operates Jusco general merchandise stores as well as thousands of convenience stores in Japan, wants much of that growth to come from expanding in Southeast Asia.

The retail conglomerate said it plans to invest 830 billion yen opening new stores, of which a quarter will be earmarked for operations in countries such as Indonesia and Thailand. "If you leave out North America, Asia will be the world's biggest market over the next 10 years," Aeon president Motoya Okada said at a press briefing in Tokyo.

Look! As I have stated in my blog. " The Great Divide" was written to highlight the beauty of the "two race" analogy in Japan. Japan is a much better country because this idea of there being one dominant race and one sub-race group. That would be "us."


I am not happy when I see big nose Ghosn running the show over at Nissan, or when I see this guy Mr. Black trying to influence things over at Aeon. Sort of reminds me of when a white Afrikkaner claims to represent Africa on the national stage as the first of something. Like when a white Afrikkaner claims to be the first African to achieve something, like space travel or some olympic accolade. It makes me sick to my stomach actually to even hear a white person claim to be African - in spite of him being born there. For the past 5 years, every time I buy a shrinkwrapped ten pack of top value energy bar / lunch substitute. The cashier sepnd 5 good minutes figuring what to do since the bar code has never been entered in the p.o.s. database. You can try this (as I did) in every Jusco / Max Value shop... It never fail... to disfunction...

America and Europe was built by, and have prospered from free slave labor for centuries, so it's only rightful that these minority groups try to claim a piece of the pie in, or at least try to recoup was has been stolen. England and America owe an enormous debt of gratitude from its former slave colonies.

While I'm no apologist for any imperialism, I think he also needs to study about kingdoms like Dahomey and Oyo, who were every bit as complicit in the slave trade as the Europeans and United States, if not more because they did the majority of the dirty work of initially catching and enslaving people.
