YOKOHAMA, Nov. 7 (AP) - (Kyodo)---Film producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki, known for the popular TV "anime" series "Uchu Senkan Yamato" (Space Battleship Yamato), died Sunday after falling into waters from a boat anchored at a port at Chichi Island in the Ogasawara island chain in southern Tokyo...

No picts of the boat ?

What a civilian 485t boat might look like ? Usually it's told in meters for sailboats or yacht...

The Coast Guard were too busy putting on dresses to help this punter...The Navy, meanwhile, was practising semenship.
Ironic this dude should die on the Yamato, named after the biggest battleship in history that was sunk without firing a shot.

Yeah... for Aircarrier you got them in tons (75 kt for a french, 110kt for an 'Murikun -I blame junk food-), same for tankers, cargo, or any ship for which the usefullness lies in it's hauling capacity. But usually, for private ships it's in meters, because it's the length of the jackoozy that matters, not how many kilo of dead prostitutes you can jam in the cargo area...

Thanks to poor translation and crappy reporting we'll never know the details. The "steamship" was most likely a translation screw up as this was the maiden voyage of the ship and modern ships of that size have diesel engines.

News reports now say Nishisaki fell off a "485 metric ton research vessel" during its "trial [sic] voyage" but it is still unclear whether Nishisaki named or owned the Yamato.

via Anime News Network-- Yamato Anime Producer Yoshinobu Nishizaki Passes Away

...Nishizaki had fallen from the center starboard section of the 485-ton research steamboat Yamato, which was anchored in Futami Harbor's Ogiura area at the Chichi-jima island in the Ogasawara Islands (Bonin Islands). After a friend sent out a distress call at around 12:45 p.m., the Coast Guard surveillance boat Southern Cross brought Nishizaki into its sickbay about 10 minutes later. He was then rushed to the clinic at the town of Ogasawara by ambulance but was pronounced dead at 2:58 p.m., about two hours and 15 minutes after the fall.
According to the Coast Guard announcement, Nishizaki was wearing a wetsuit to go swimming when he fell from the boat and drowned. The boat had nine people aboard and it was 250 meters (about 820 feet) from the shore so that several people aboard could go swimming.

via kotaku.com -- Star Blazers Creator Dead After Falling From Boat

....Nishizaki also produced Urotsukidoji, the first anime to feature tentacle rape.
Even as he passed his 50s, Nishizaki never quite settled into old age. In 1997, he was arrested for possession of illegal drugs. He went to the Philippines while on bail, smuggling in a grenade launcher, an M16 and a Glock back into Japan. Two years later, he was sentenced for his drug arrest.
Police later discovered more illegal drugs and firearms in his house. Besides the weapons, he kept 30 howitzer shells in a station wagon in his garage. Nishizaki was also sentenced for the weapons and was finally released from prison in 2007.

Pff, cargo hold, smargo hold.

Everyone who knows anything about ships knows that you put dead hookers in the void.
