Lost four kilo "effortlessly" on a low carb eating plan, and did not have to alter my drinking or exercise habits at all (lots of 12 oz. curls , but not much else in the way of working out). The hardest part was the intense withdrawal from sugar as a fuel source (all carbs are broken down into simple sugars in the body) and finding ways to get enough animal fat in the diet. Lots of meat out there, but much of it is too lean. I typically eat bacon & eggs for breakfast, chicken breast with the skin for lunch, and some sort of pork or beef dish for dinner. Some vegetables in season, and very little fruit and starches. As a bonus, my blood pressure dropped 15 points, I rarely catch cold anymore, and my guts have never behaved better.

Screwed-down Hairdo wrote:Shite, mate...17kg is a whopping loss. No wonder you're on a plateau. As Yokohammer said, the hard part is keeping it off. I'd aim for not putting anything on to a loss of 3kg over the cold months, then hit it hard again when it warms up next spring.

Actually I have a pretty ambitious goal to meet by the end of the year. We'll see if I get there or not.

Part of the reason for the weight loss is that I'd like to be doing a bit more rooting... :p Here's hoping that works out!

Screwed-down Hairdo wrote:You should be goddamned proud of yourself, mate.

 Thanks for the kind thoughts. It's nowhere near as big a deal as it might seem though. I had cravings for junk food when I first started out but once I got over those I didn't really have any desire for it any more. I don't drink much at home (just an occasional Scotch) and I haven't been going out that much this year so things just kinda fell into place. I could have lost double this amount if I had been really focused on it.

I ate low carb and kept my weight in check till I moved back to Japan. It's too fucking hard to do here. Especially at lunch time.

I've had good luck with fast food at lunch time. I will often eat a double quarter-pounder and only eat the bottom bun. That way is only around 20 grams of carbs. Or, I'll get four pieces of chicken at KFC, which does have some carbs from the breading, but is a lot better than a bunch of bread or rice or potatoes. A lot of places serve starchy staples in combination, making it doubly bad. I've had excellent results with low carb, and would probably drop the last two kilos I'd like if I could just lay off the beer.

try getting off one or two stations before your normal station when going home. it is colder now, so you dont have to worry about the humidity turning you into a butter ball.

dieting is a bitch... but going for a jog is still a bitch... do what you can deal with most.

Twinkie diet helps nutrition professor lose 27 pounds

His premise: That in weight loss, pure calorie counting is what matters most -- not the nutritional value of the food.

The premise held up: On his "convenience store diet," he shed 27 pounds in two months.

I lost ten kilo by cutting back the drinking. Most of my food is home cooked.

Yes, and the waitresses hover over you, threatening to beat the crap out of you if you don't lick the bowl clean.

You certainly wouldn't want to show any self control.

A lot of people blame the overweight for lacking self control and being guilty of the sin of gluttony. They ate too much, so they got fat. Much like saying a person is an alcoholic because they drink too much. Neither statement addresses the why, and therefore neither statement is of much use to anyone.

Carbohydrates are either simple sugars, or broken down into simple sugars in the body. Sugar metabolism is regulated by insulin. If sugar is chronically elevated, so is insulin. Insulin presence causes sugars to be stored as fat, while the absence of insulin allows fat stores to be used for fuel. If one's insulin is chronically high, they store more fat than they burn. This creates a situation where the body needs more sugar because it's being locked up, and fat isn't being released. So appetite ramps up to compensate for the "lack" of sugar. The process repeats. People gain weight...

Actually, I think I still have it right. Eat less, lose weight.

I've never seen a fat person who didn't eat a lot of food. I eat too much sometimes and guess what? I gain weight. I once lost 40 lbs in about three months by eating less and exercising strenuously three days per week.

If you raise the nose of your aircraft, you will slow down.
If you eat less food, you will lose weight.
If you exercise more, you will lose weight.

That's all well and good if the human body worked exactly as a bomb calorimeter, but biological systems are a tad more complex...

If anyone has the time and inclination, this series of videos on Youtube is one of the best introductory lectures I've seen on the topic. This is one of five:

There are a variety of ways poor eating habits can manifest themselves. One who becomes insulin resistant of course gets metabolic syndrome and gains weight. Others have intestinal troubles (IBS, Crohn's, etc.), diabetes, arteriosclerosis, chronic liver disease, various cancers, osteoporosis, asthma, depression, stroke, Alzheimer's, and also kidney and pulmonary disorders. Yes, Japanese dudes are walking pictures of health!;)

I don't think human metabolism has evolved in less than two generations. We had no where near the amount of obesity we see today 50 years ago.

I think bad eating habits, vegetables and fruits with half the nutritional content of 50 years ago from "modern" food distribution, corn syrup instead of sugar, plus other cultural behavior changes have had more of an effect than any changes in human physiology in processing sugars.

I think if you look back, you'll find no one has suggested ultra-rapid human evolution of our metabolic processes. What you will find is the idea that we now eat more carbohydrates (which are either complex or simple sugars), and that too much sugar will over time will chronically raise insulin, which is the driver of both conversion of sugar into fat, and the storage of fat in the body. A diet low in sugar (remember carbs are sugar) will keep insulin low, and both allow stored fat to be used a fuel, and consumed protein and fat to also be used as fuel. The body easily synthesizes the tiny amout of glucose needed from amino acids and fatty acids.

The US government started flogging the lipid hypothesis of obesity in the '70s with the McGovern commission and the subsequent cholesterol witch hunt, and followed up in the early '80s with dietary recommendations and the food pyramid. It's all been downhill after that. Americans (and many others around the world) now eat less meat and more carbs than 30 years ago. They also exercise more. Yet they can't control their weight. Diabetes is through the roof. Cancers are on the rise. Grandma knew bread and potatoes make you fat. Uncle Sam sure told her, huh!

I'm not a strong believer in a low-carb diet for everyone and I agree that it mainly comes to caloric intake versus the ammount of exercise you do. That's why Michael Phelp can eat 10,000 calories a day and not get fat. However, I found that low-carb worked well for me and that since I haven't been able to maintain a low carb diet, I've had a lot more trouble maintaining my weight. Of course I'm also older and don't exercis as much either, so I'm sure those are big factors.

By the way, I wasn't one of those people that loaded up on bacon, steak, and bunless hot dogs. My diet was pretty much fresh chicken, eggs, natural cheese, veggies, nuts, olive oil and fiber supplements. I also cut way back on the beer and drank spirits straight or with soda water. I felt a hell of a lot better than I do now.
