The proceeds went to charity, so the buyer wasn't exactly buying 28 apples for a million yen. Big difference there.

The proceeds stayed in the pockets of the seller(s).
The point here is the publicity it gets the buyer – national TV coverage and stories on countless blogs for a million yen?
