Nobody wants to deal with the millions of refugees such a situation creates. Added to this is the fact that NK has a much, much smaller per capita GDP than SK, it's nothing like the situation that existed between the GDR and West Germany at the time when Germany was unified. A Korean Wende without South Korea dropping like a stone on all known economic and development rankings is simply not possible. And I also remember reading something about the average South Korean no longer being interested in a unification for the sake of seeing long-lost familiy and friends again, as it's been over half a century since the two countries where divided. By comparison, the Berlin wall only existed for 26 years (1963-1989) with travel of Wessies into the east still possible.

Exactly... that's why we need a massive bloody land war with as much NK casualties as possible...

Kill the people, take the land... problem solved...

Looks like something might be happening again.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun but it's sinking
Racing around to come up behind you again
The sun is the same in a relative way, but you're older
Shorter of breath and one day closer to death

N.Korea "readies missiles", China to help ensure peace

Postby BigInJapan » Sun Nov 28, 2010 3:24 pm

The latest news from Reuters indicates that NK is getting ready for smackdown...

YEONPYEONG, South Korea | Sun Nov 28, 2010 12:50am EST
(Reuters) - North Korea has placed surface-to-surface missiles on launch pads in the Yellow Sea, Yonhap news agency reported on Sunday, as the United States and South Korea began military exercises and China said it would try to ensure peace.

South Korean President Lee Myung-bak told a visiting Chinese delegation that Beijing, North Korea's only major ally which is traditionally reluctant to criticize the reclusive regime, should do more to help.

Yonhap also said North Korea had moved surface-to-air missiles to frontline areas, days after it shelled a tiny South Korean island killing four people. The North's official KCNA news agency warned of retaliatory action if its territory is violated.

"We will deliver a brutal military blow on any provocation which violates our territorial waters," KCNA said.

The nuclear-powered carrier USS George Washington, which carries 75 warplanes and has a crew of over 6,000, has joined the exercises and will be accompanied by at least four other U.S. warships, an official from U.S. Forces Korea (USKF) told Reuters.

This might be the first time the F-22 sees action... taking out NK's radar and AA sites and whatever is left of its antiquated airforce to and from its targets. Not unlike Iraq 1991, except there is no oil.

Then again, getting the nod from China, Russia, SK and Japan, and just dropping a nice big ballistic missile with a conventional warhead right on the balcony of the palace during mayday parade would probably be good enough. Drop panflets that Kim Il-Sung smashed the palace with his great big galactic fist because he had enough of his son's bullshit.

The 10 wheeler chassis seems to be from China... As seen here, with the typical chinese cab-over-engine:

This could have gone in the Wiki leaks thread, but ...

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Wed Dec 01, 2010 12:30 am

Leaks: China knows less about NKorea than thought

China knows less about and has less influence over its close ally North Korea than is usually presumed and is likely to eventually accept a reunified peninsula under South Korean rule, according to U.S. diplomatic files leaked to the WikiLeaks website.

The memos — called cables, though they were mostly encrypted e-mails — paint a picture of three countries struggling to understand an isolated, hard-line regime in the face of a dearth of information and indicate American and South Korean diplomats' reliance on China's analysis and interpretation .....

In the cables, China sometimes seems unaware of or uncertain about issues ranging from who will succeed North Korean leader Kim Jong Il to the regime's uranium enrichment plans and its nuclear test, suggesting that the North plays its cards close to its chest even with its most important ally.

Questioned about the enriched uranium program in June last year, Chinese officials said they believed that was program was "only in an initial phase" — a characterization that now appears to have been a gross underestimate .....

China "would be comfortable with a reunified Korea controlled by Seoul and anchored to the US in a 'benign alliance' as long as Korea was not hostile towards China," Chun said.

Economic opportunities in a reunified Korea could further induce Chinese acquiescence, he said.

The diplomatic cables warn, however, that China would not accept the presence of U.S. troops north of the demilitarized zone that currently forms the North-South border.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said China would not comment specifically on the cables .....

My impression had been more along the lines of "steely" or "rugged," but with "irony," I get where you're coming from...
