What! Pron is not sold in convience stores in other countries? Apparently, she hasn't been to too many in her world travels.

If she had been a little more focussed on say, child or rape pron I think her point would have been well taken. But if you eliminate pron you destroy 90% of the enterainment industry here.

One things for sure, manga used to be fun in Japan, and now it's mainly all twisted sicko shit.

...Years ago, as a boy brought to Japan by my Japanese mother, I found a throwaway manga on a train seat. I flipped through it as my mother chatted with her friend. The erotic images were stirring, so much so that I put the phonebook-sized comic back where I found it, lest my mother and her friend catch me reading it. Today, I find my youthful shame shameful. I wish I had been able to share the images with my mother to explore their meanings intelligently. I recall an office lady with her skirt hitched up and an adorably pillowish face...more...

One of my reasons for coming here was the manga and anime.

Since coming here I completely stopped watching all anime and reading all manga. (apart from the stuff I grew up with)

Im all for the freedom of art/speech. But the truth is that most of the ero manga and anime is designed to cater to the lonely sad taros living by themselves in 1k apartments. And who will probably never marry.

As long as this stuff is controlled and sold in only certain places then its fine. But at the end of the day this sort of shit still does more harm than good.

Its the same argument that hash and weed will lead to harder drugs.

Isnt it possible that this manga and anime will lead to hardcore child porn and pedophilia?
Maybe Jps think this is ok?

Well it fucking isn't. And they need to learn that it isn't.

Yes, im judging Jps with western values. But id like to think that these values are regarded as right by most countries in the world.

Why should Japan (who is part of an international community) be any different?

I know that many people love their porn and that's fine.

I don't want the sickos that buy and read child/animal/rape/tentacle porn
near my kids if possible.

does that sound unreasonable ?

quite reasonable if you ask me. i dont let anyone near my son without me being within shanking distance of them. period. I dont even let my kids out of sight around my inlaws i dont know much (and 2 that I know quite well)... why? cause crazy shit happens in japan and it usually involves family.

and just to list the shit japan needs to get on:
1. kiddy porn - it is not "freedom of expression" when you make it and sell it, or else yelling "fire" or "there is a bomb" in crowded areas, or making a banner that says "I will kill the royal family of Japan" and walking around with it around the imperial palace (and selling the banner at stores) would also be ok.

2. Pachinko - if gambling is illegal, then why isn't pachinko? cause the reward is not money? but you can go right outside the place and exchange the prize balls for cash? when you play poker you bet chips and you have to exchange them for cash... couldn't you do the same with this and make it "ok"? Where does the profits go to? North Korea is "rumored" but if a guy ships motorcycles to NK, he is jailed and put on the news... but not pachinko, just look the other way.

3. Smoking in family restaurants and parks - it kills other people, no need to allow parents to sit down at mcdonalds and smoke in front of their 2 year old eating a fuckin happy meal... More so, a "family restaurant" should be kinen all the way. Prime example, Hiroo Koen. there is a bannar that says no smoking or something like that, but 15 meters away is an ash tray... hugh? I saw a dad smoking really close to the slide one day. so i just started walking up to him staring him down. he put that shit out quick and scurried off with his kids. I dont fuck about with that.

All your argument are good and fine taken alone...

But they are the highway to disaster in human societies.

As long as something do not directly harm someone it should not be forbidden. ever.

Because, everything turn into a slippery slope... always. The first generation fight to make something illegal, then the second generation, born with the previous restriction see no problem extending them... and on and on... and faster than we can realise it's the spanish inquisishiun all over again...

There will always be some busybody to beg to "think of the children".

Pornography should not be censored, it's the job of the parents to keep their children away from it.

Smoking should be forbidden in any indoor public space as it is invasive. But in open space, streets and parks... Between this and the cars, i'd say deal with the cars first... Even if I love me some diesel fumes in the morning... (toyu heaters smells like a busy flight deck when you start them).

Pedopornography in mangas... well I hate mangas... they are complete waste of ink and recycled papers... But is any person harmed in the process... beside the delivery guy who have to handle this heavy crap... NO... People with disorders attracted by this will not be cured overnight if you cease publication... so no reason, no need, no purpose in censoring beside creating a fake crime...

Well yes, there are gay performer elsewhere too, but they are ubiquitous on Japanese TV. For every variety show that I have had been forced to watch, it is always a game of 'spot the tranny'.

Just an observation, but I wonder why virtually all of the okama/new-half that appear on J TV are guys. The only time I've seen women that are openly batting for the other team, is when they are on a show featuring homosexuality, or gender change operations etc.

I'm guessing one possible reason for the relative proliferation of transvestites (either guys just dressed in women's clothes, or ones that have the implants and the snip-snip op) on J TV is that Japan has Kabuki theater (where all parts are played by males) which has been around for 400 years, and the reverse being the Takarazuka Revue the all-female musical theater troupe.

It's not which is exactly what dimwit is saying.

I've always thought that the way gay men are presented on Japanese TV as a kind of sideshow would be offensive to gay people. Of course everyone on J-TV acts like a jackass.

Kadokawa Shoten, a leading manga publisher, has said that since Tokyo wants to introduce such ordinances then they will boycott the city's International Anime Fair.

Dan Kanemitsu, who has the best series of blog posts in English on this whole affair, covers the announcement here. (He also covered Ishihara's controversial comments here)

imho is perfectly fine. What is there to protest about? As long as it only contests stuff related to minors....

The group of publishers who announced they would boycott Tokyo's Anime Fair in protest at the new legislation have now announced their own event. It will take place the same day in a calculated snub to Ishihara.
